Описание: This thesis presents a pioneering method for gleaning the maximum information from the deepest images of the far-infrared universe obtained with the Herschel satellite, reaching galaxies fainter by an order of magnitude than in previous studies. Using these high-quality measurements, the author first demonstrates that the vast majority of galaxy star formation did not take place in merger-driven starbursts over 90% of the history of the universe, which suggests that galaxy growth is instead dominated by a steady infall of matter. The author further demonstrates that massive galaxies suffer a gradual decline in their star formation activity, providing an alternative path for galaxies to stop star formation. One of the key unsolved questions in astrophysics is how galaxies acquired their mass in the course of cosmic time. In the standard theory, the merging of galaxies plays a major role in forming new stars. Then, old galaxies abruptly stop forming stars through an unknown process. Investigating this theory requires an unbiased measure of the star formation intensity of galaxies, which has been unavailable due to the dust obscuration of stellar light.
Описание: This book presents a synthesis of what we learned about particle acceleration and kinematics from recent solar flare observations with the Yohkoh, SoHO, TRACE, CGRO spacecraft and radio instruments over the last decade. It deals with the topology of magnetic reconnection regions, discusses the geometry, small-scale dynamics, and electromagnetic fields of acceleration region in solar flares, provides a systematic description of the relativistic kinematics of particle acceleration, propagation, time-of-flight measurements, particle trapping, precipitation, and the resulting emissions in gamma rays, hard X-rays, and radio wavelengths. It is the first monograph on these solar flare topics, written for the level of graduate students and researchers in the field of solar physics, astrophysics, and magnetospheric physics.

Описание: Galaxies are the building blocks of the Universe: standing like islands in space, they are where the stars are born and where many extraordinary and little-understood phenomena can be observed. Here, renowned science writer John Gribbin explores what we have learnt about the cosmos through studying both our own galaxy and our distant neighbours.

Описание: Constructional morphology explains features of organisms from a constructional and functional point of view. Constructional morphology also explains options and constraints during the evolution determined by internal constructional needs, ontogenetic demands, inherited organizational preconditions and environmental clues.

Описание: Suitable for students and researchers on early galaxies, this title offers an introduction to frontiers in astrophysics: the quest to understand how the oldest and most distant galaxies in our universe first formed. It bridges the gap between theory and observation.
