Описание: The Pentateuch (or the Torah) consists of the first five books of the Bible and is a foundational scripture for millions of people, both Jews and Christians. In this book Paula Gooder and Brad Anderson provide a clear and accessible introduction for those beginning Bible study. Key themes such as creation and the flood, exodus and liberation, as well as covenant and law are presented and analyzed. These themes are explored in their ancient context and from the standpoint of contemporary concerns such as liberation theology, gender issues and ecology. For this new edition introductory sections on the five books of the Pentateuch have been expanded and supplemented, while recent developments in the quest for the origins of the Pentateuch have also been updated. A new chapter on academic approaches to the study of the Pentateuch has been added, along with a section on the 'afterlife' of the Pentateuch which focuses on its place in the history of interpretation, as well as in the arts and culture. Reading lists and references have been updated throughout to take account of the most recent scholarship.

Описание: On Christian Teaching (or De Doctrina Christiana) is one of Augustine`s most important works on the Christian tradition. Undertaken at the same time as the Confessions, it was written to enable students of Christianity to be their own interpreters of the Bible. In so doing Augustine provides an outline of Christian theology, a detailed discussion of ethical problems, and a fascinating early contribution to sign theory. He also makes asystematic attempt to determine what elements of classical `pagan` education are permissible for a Christian. This long-needed, up-to-date translation gives a close but stylish representation of Augustine`s thought and expression.
Описание: This is the first published book-length treatment on Paul Tillich and Judaism, which is a neglected aspect of Tillich’s thought. It has three compelling features. First, pivotal biographical details show the importance of Judaism for Tillich, and that he ardently opposed anti-Semitism before WWII and after the Holocaust. Second, Tillich’s theological method is examined in key primary sources to show how he maintains continuity between Judaism and Christianity. The primary source analysis includes his 1910 and 1912 dissertations on Schelling, the 1933 The Socialist Decision, the 1952 Berlin lectures on “the Jewish Question,” and his final public lecture on the importance of the history of religion for systematic theology. Particular attention is paid to his dialectical and theological history of religion. Third, Tillich’s positive theology of Judaism contrasts sharply with the many complex, negative ways in which Judaism is portrayed in Western thought. This contributes significantly to our understanding the evolving history of Christian anti-Judaism.

Описание: "A magnificent history of doctrine."-New York Review of Books "In this volume Jaroslav Pelikan continues the splendid work he has done thus far in his projected five-volume history of the development of Christian doctrine, defined as 'what the Church believes, teaches, and confesses on the basis of the word of God.' The entire work will become an indispensable resource not only for the history of doctrine but also for its reformulation today. Copious documentation in the margins and careful indexing add to its immense usefulness."-E. Glenn Hinson, Christian Century "This book is based on a most meticulous examination of medieval authorities and the growth of medieval theology is essentially told in their own words. What is more important, however, then the astounding number of primary sources the author has consulted or his sovereign familiarity with modern studies on his subject, is his ability to discern form and direction in the bewildering growth of medieval Christian doctrine, and, by thoughtful emphasis and selection, to show the pattern of that development in a lucid and persuasive narrative. No one interested in the history of Christianity or theology and no medievalist, whatever the field of specialization, will be able to ignore this magnificent synthesis."-Bernhard W. Scholz, History "The series is obviously the indispensable text for graduate theological study in the development of doctrine, and an important reference for scholars of religious and intellectual history as well. . . . Professor Pelikan's series marks a significant departure, and in him we have at last a master teacher."-Marjorie O'Rourke Boyle, Commonweal
Описание: Describes Christ as the "primordial sacrament" in a reflection on his public ministry, death and resurrection inspired by the universal human search for such a `sacrament`. This title states that the church`s sacraments have to be an "earthly extension" of the liberation brought by Christ`s story.
Описание: Troubled by the Great Depression, two world wars, and modernity's challenges to religion, Bernard Lonergan attempted to do for our age what Thomas Aquinas did for his: to integrate the best of secular and sacred learning and thus further the Catholic tradition of using both faith and reason to advance the common good and participate in God's work of salvation. Drawing on modern advances in the natural sciences, economics, history and psychology, as well as ancient and medieval philosophy and theology, Lonergan's work is highly fruitful but exceedingly complex. This book provides a basic yet broad introduction to Lonergan's thought in particular and Catholic theology in general.

Mark T. Miller's approach is a theological anthropology organised into three main categories, ""progress,"" ""decline,"" and ""redemption,"" which transpose the traditional concepts of nature, sin, and grace into a contemporary social and historical context. Progress is driven by the natural human desire for God. Decline is a downward spiral of violence and suffering caused by sin's perversion of the good, natural desire. Redemption is God's gift of God's self that fulfills our natural desire and becomes the foundation for authentic human living.

Throughout this introductory text, progress, decline and redemption constitute a systematic framework for examining the central terms of Catholic theology, as well as key notions in Lonergan's theology. The book provides a firm foundation for students of Lonergan as well as anyone interested in understanding Catholic theology and applying it to ministry, education and other fields.

Описание:
Approaching God explores the ways in which phenomenology, metaphysics and theological enquiry can throw light upon each other. This is a matter of great interest and importance to the future of philosophical theology and the philosophy of religion. What, if anything, has philosophical reflection about God to contribute to Christian theology? And if indeed philosophy plays a positive role in theological reflection--what kind of philosophy? The first-person philosophical perspective of phenomenology or the objective philosophical perspective of metaphysics?
Masterson devotes three chapters to, respectively, phenomenological, metaphysical, and theological approaches to God. Each are seen as animated by a first principle from which a comprehensive account of everything is said to follow--'Human Consciousness' in the case of phenomenology; 'Being' in the case of metaphysics; and 'God' in the case of theology. Although philosophers and theologians such as Ricoeur, Levinas, Kearney, Caputo, and Barth are considered briefly, Approaching God essentially provides a dialogue about theological and theistic issues between the phenomenological approach of the leading French Christian phenomenologist Jean-Luc Marion and the realist metaphysical approach of Aquinas. Masterson maintains that all three approaches are needed in trying to speak appropriately about God--they are irreducible but complementary.
Описание: Focuses on religion and secularisation, viewing from various vantage points: secularisation and God-talk; secularisation and the church`s liturgy; secularisation and the church`s new self-understanding; and, secularisation and the future of humankind on earth in light of the eschaton (church and social politics).
Описание: Over the past half century, there has been a proliferation of scholarship on the great American theologian Jonathan Edwards. However, the vast majority of this output confines itself to the details of his work. With some welcome exceptions, the forest has often been missed for the trees. In this ground breaking study William Schweitzer presents a new reading of Edwards: He starts with the question what is distinctive in Edwards’ theology? The answer comes in Edwards’ insight into Trinitarian life. God is eternally communicative of his knowledge, love, and joy among the Three Persons of the Trinity, and this divine communicativeness was for Edwards the explanation for why God created the universe. More specifically, however, Edwards believed that God’s communication carries with it the Trinitarian hallmark of “harmony.” This hallmark is not always east to discern, even for the regenerate. Edwards’ lifelong project—as demonstrated by the common purpose of all three unfinished “Great Works”—was to interpret the harmony found in and among the several media of revelation.
Описание: The so-called extra Calvinisticum—the doctrine that the incarnate Son of God continued to exist beyond the flesh—was not invented by John Calvin or Reformed theologians. If this is true, as is almost universally acknowledged today, then why do scholars continue to fixate almost exclusively on Calvin when they discuss this doctrine? The answer to the “why” of this scholarly trend, however, is not as important as correcting the trend. This volume expands our vision of the historical functions and christological significance of this doctrine by expounding its uses in Cyril of Alexandria, Thomas Aquinas, Zacharias Ursinus, and in theologians from the Reformation to the present. Despite its relative obscurity, the doctrine that came to be known as the “Calvinist extra” is a possession of the church catholic and a feature of Christology that ought to be carefully appropriated in contemporary reflection on the Incarnation.
