Описание:

Michel Foucault’s seminal The History of Sexuality (1976–1984) has since its publication provided a context for the emergence of critical historical studies of sexuality. This collection reassesses the state of the historiography on sexuality—a field in which the German case has been traditionally central. In many diverse ways, the Foucauldian intervention has governed the formation of questions in the field as well as the assumptions about how some of these questions should be answered. It can be argued, however, that some of these revolutionary insights have ossified into dogmas or truisms within the field. Yet, as these contributions meticulously reveal, those very truisms, when revisited with a fresh eye, can lead to new, unexpected insights into the history of sexuality, necessitating a return to and reinterpretation of Foucault’s richly complex work. This volume will be necessary reading for students of historical sexuality as well as for those readers in German history and German studies generally who have an interest in the history of sexuality.

Описание: The startling discovery in a flat in Melbourne, Australia, of over 160 letters exchanged between a young, loving Jewish couple in Nazi Germany was the catalyst for former ABC journalist Dagmar Strauss Yaaris exploration of her parents hidden past. The sudden windfall of old letters is replete with unexpected revelations. As the letters are translated, a fascinating family drama unfolds. Strauss Yaari learns of her fathers arrest by the Gestapo while on his honeymoon, an event that separates her newlywed parents, Gottfried and Irene Strauss, for an agonising three years. The author was stunned to discover her gentle and unassuming father had been charged and convicted for preparation for high treason. This event and more are artfully depicted in Their Lives Before Us. It is a story of suffering and survival in calamitous circumstances and the beginning of a journey that moves from Germany to Japanese-controlled Shanghai, China, and ends on the distant shores of Australia.

Описание:

During the years leading up to the revolutions of 1848, liberal and conservative Germans engaged in a contest over the terms of the Enlightenment legacy and the meaning of Christianity--a contest that grew most intense in the Grand Duchy of Baden, where liberalism first became an influential political movement. Bringing insights drawn from Jewish and women's studies into German history, Dagmar Herzog demonstrates how centrally Christianity's problematic relationships to Judaism and to sexuality shaped liberal, conservative, and radical thought in the pre-revolutionary years. In particular, she reveals how often conflicts over the "politics of the personal," especially over sex and marriage, determined "larger" political matters, among them the relationship between church and state and the terms on which Jews were granted civic rights.

Herzog documents the rise of a politically sophisticated conservative Catholicism, and explores liberals' ensuing eagerness to advance a humanist version of Christianity. Yet she also examines the limitations at the heart of the liberal project, especially liberals' unwillingness to grant equality to those deemed "different" from the Christian male norm. Finally, the author analyzes the difficulties encountered by philosemitic and feminist radicals in reconceptualizing both classical liberalism and Christianity in order to make room for the claims of Jews and women.
