Описание: Public perceptions of political ethics are at the heart of current political debate. Drawing on original survey data, this book offers new insights into how citizens understand political ethics and integrity, and shows how current institutional preoccupations with standards of conduct all too often miss the mark.

Описание:
Science is built on trust. The assumption is that scientists will conduct their work with integrity, honesty, and a strict adherence to scientific protocols. Written by geoscientists for geoscientists, Scientific Integrity and Ethics in the Geosciences acquaints readers with the fundamental principles of scientific ethics and shows how they apply to everyday work in the classroom, laboratory, and field. Resources are provided throughout to help discuss and implement principles of scientific integrity and ethics.
Volume highlights include:
Examples of international and national codes and policies
Exploration of the role of professional societies in scientific integrity and ethics
References to scientific integrity and ethics in publications and research data
Discussion of science integrity, ethics, and geoethics in education
Extensive coverage of data applications
Scientific Integrity and Ethics in the Geosciences is a valuable resource for students, faculty, instructors, and scientists in the geosciences and beyond. It is also useful for geoscientists working in industry, government, and policymaking.

An analysis of two heuristic strategies for the development of mechanistic models, illustrated with historical examples from the life sciences.
In Discovering Complexity, William Bechtel and Robert Richardson examine two heuristics that guided the development of mechanistic models in the life sciences: decomposition and localization. Drawing on historical cases from disciplines including cell biology, cognitive neuroscience, and genetics, they identify a number of "choice points" that life scientists confront in developing mechanistic explanations and show how different choices result in divergent explanatory models. Describing decomposition as the attempt to differentiate functional and structural components of a system and localization as the assignment of responsibility for specific functions to specific structures, Bechtel and Richardson examine the usefulness of these heuristics as well as their fallibility -- the sometimes false assumption underlying them that nature is significantly decomposable and hierarchically organized.
When Discovering Complexity was originally published in 1993, few philosophers of science perceived the centrality of seeking mechanisms to explain phenomena in biology, relying instead on the model of nomological explanation advanced by the logical positivists (a model Bechtel and Richardson found to be utterly inapplicable to the examples from the life sciences in their study). Since then, mechanism and mechanistic explanation have become widely discussed. In a substantive new introduction to this MIT Press edition of their book, Bechtel and Richardson examine both philosophical and scientific developments in research on mechanistic models since 1993.
Описание: Simulation-Based Engineering and Science (SBE&S) cuts across disciplines, showing tremendous promise in areas from storm prediction and climate modeling. This title concludes that while the US remains the quantitative leader in SBE&S research and development, it is very much in danger of losing that edge to Europe and Asia.

Описание: Bernal has a practising British scientist challenged conventional arguments about the funding of science so originally, and so powerfully.` - David Edgerton, Imperial College Does government funding of science promote economic and cultural growth?
Описание: This collection provides a philosophical and historical analysis of the development and current situation of managed care. Its special feature is its depth of analysis as the philosophical, social, and economic issues of managed care are developed.
