Описание: The work presented in this monograph marks a new era, we believe, both in the development of quantitative anatomy of the lung, and in the correlation of anatomy with physiology. For many years, physiologists interested in the overall functioning of the lung have felt a need for better quantitative descriptions of pulmonary anatomy. As physiologists, we know a good deal about the forces operating to producepulmonary ventilation, and the quantities that define this function in rest and exercise ; and the same for effective distribution of air within the lung - alveolar ventilation-, and for the exchange of respiratory gases between air and blood. There have been no correspondingly precise quantitative measurements of the pulmonary structures that serve theese functions. The great advances in the study of pulmonary anatomy in the past decade have been chiefly in the realm of fine structure. This has tended to bring together anatomy and biochemistry or physical chemistry, rather than anatomy and physiology. This conjunction has aided, for example, the conception of diffusion as a physicochemical process, but not that of diffusion as a metabolic bodily function. It was, therefore, a remarkably fortunate circumstance which brought together in our laboratory, about three years ago, Professor DoMINGO GoMEZ and Dr. EWALD R. WEIBEL: Professor GoMEZ a mathematician and biophysicist of dis tinction and long experience; Dr. WEIBEL a young anatomist trained under Pro fessor GIAN T?NDURY in Z?rich, and with additional research experience with Professor A VERILL LIEBOW at Y ale.

Описание: In this context morphology means the study of lake fonns and fonn elements, their genesis (from geographical and geological viewpoints) and their role in a broad physical lirnnological perspective. Lake morphometry deals with the quantification and measurement of these forms and fonn elements. MOrphometric data are of fundamental importance in most limnological and hydrological projects. This is obvious to most scientists in the field, but it is just as evident that lake morphology and lake morphometry are compara- tively neglected topics of scientific endeavour. One can take the classical work of Welch - "Limnological methods" - as an example. This book was pub- lished in 1948 and it is still used as the main reference (see e. g. Wetzel, 1975), in spite of the fact that the source of most morphometric data, the bathymetric map, today is practically always constructed from hydrographic surveys conducted with echosounding equipment, a technique that became widely used and accepted only after 1948. Echosounding is not even mentioned in Welch s book. One can also point out that all scale-dependent morphometric parameters, like the shoreline length, the shore development and the lake bottom roughness, up till quite recently, have had limited quantitative re- levance, since these parameters could not be defined unambiguously.

Описание: Considering the placenta from the functional point of view as an exchange organ be- tween mother and foetus, it is noteworthy that placentas of all types have a common structural principle in that all placentas have structures enlarging the surface area avail- able for exchange, as is also the case with other organs with similar functions, such as the lungs, kidneys and intestine. It may therefore be assumed that a quantitative rela- tionship must exist between the structure of the placenta and its function. Accurate information on this relationship could contribute to better understanding of the pla- centa and of its function. The study of this relationship requires quantitative physio- logical and morphological data. Detailed data on quantitative morphology (morphometry) are available mainly for the human placenta. Even these data, however, are rather sparse as far as the early sta- ges of development are concerned, because most-studies relate to full term placentas (see Aherne, 1975; Bender et al., 1974; Laga et aI., 1973; Geissler et aI., 1972; Baur, 1972; Cattoor, 1967; Aherne and Dunnill, 1966). We know of only a few morphomet- ric studies concerned with placentas of other animal species. These studies relate to in- vestigations on the development of the placenta of sheep (Stegeman, 1974) and of cat- tle (Baur, 1972), and measurements carried out on full term placentas of the guinea- pig (Millier et aI., 1967) and on full term placentas of various other species (Baur, 1973).

Описание: Modern Morphometrics in Physical Anthropology provides a comprehensive sampling of the applications of modern, sophisticated methods of shape analysis in anthropology, and serves as a starting point for the exploration of these practices by students and researchers who might otherwise lack the local expertise or training to get started.
