Описание: First published in 1984, this volume examines the then-two Yemens, North and South, and their strategic importance in the Middle East. South Yemen, formerly Aden, was a Marxist country controlling the entrance to the Red Sea. North Yemen contained rival tribal factions and was a buffer country between the Marxists of South Yemen and Saudi Arabia, a traditional Islamic and pro-Western country. This book presents much new research and thinking on the historical development and contemporary political scene in the two Yemens. It considers the internal politics of the two countries, discussing the tribal divisions in North Yemen and the attempts by the Soviets to establish a stable pro-Soviet regime in South Yemen, and it also discusses international politics connected with the Yemens. Government institutions are examined and the attempts to forge these comparatively backward countries into modern states along with the prospects for union between the two countries are discussed. This comprehensive selection of papers, which harnesses much expertise from many countries on the Yemen, is essential reading.

Описание: Beyond the Arab Cold War brings the Yemen Civil War, 1962-68, to the forefront of modern Middle East History. Yemen was a showcase for a new era of peacekeeping, counterinsurgency, and chemical warfare. This book shows how the Yemen Civil War was not dominated by a single power or rivalry, but rather became an arena for global conflict.

Описание: This book explains the Saudi decision to launch a direct military intervention in Yemen in 2015 by comparing it with the monarchy`s response to Egyptian intervention into Yemen in 1962.
A tour de force in understanding the failure of democracy in providing human well-being.
Has democracy ended human suffering, a task that the political system set out for itself? Or is democracy incompatible with modernity and, therefore, fails to achieve human well-being? If so, are we left with any option? The book asks these acutely political questions and states emphatically that democracy has failed to ensure the well-being of humanity as a whole. Further, it tries to answer this by exploring the Gandhian alternative to modernism and democracy in contemporary times. In the words of the authors themselves, ‘We are aware that in a world divided into a number of ideological camps, the way out suggested in this book will invite ridicule and accusation of orthodoxy. However, the truth has to be told, no matter what the reaction'.

Описание:
This book compares different international responses to the internal conflicts in Syria and Yemen through an examination of the coverage each conflict has received in the media. The work explores and evaluates rival explanations for why the Syrian conflict has garnered so much more attention than the Yemen conflict and the opportunities and limitations for using international law and international humanitarian law to discuss and analyze intervention. Using this assessment, the authors discuss why this differential attention matters in terms of IR theory, humanitarian response, and policy recommendations for responding to humanitarian crises.
