Описание:

How does the consciousness of being a woman affect the workings of the poetic imagination? With this question Margaret Homans introduces her study of three nineteenth-century women poets and their response to a literary tradition that defines the poet as male. Her answer suggests why there were so few great women poets in an age when most of the great novelists were women.

Описание: The first book to look at poets' letters seriously as an art form GBS_insertPreviewButtonPopup( 'ISBN:9780748681327', 'ISBN:9780748681334']);

Fifteen enlightening chapters by leading international biographers, critics and poets examine letter writing among poets in the last two hundred years. They range from Coleridge, Wordsworth, Keats and Shelley in the nineteenth-century to Eliot, Yeats, Bishop and Larkin in the twentieth. In doing so, they respond to the following questions. Who are the great letter writers of the past? Why is reading other people's mail so addictive? What is the relationship between letter writing and other literary genres such as poetry? Divided into three sections--Contexts and Issues, Romantic and Victorian Letter Writing, and Twentieth-Century Letter Writing--the volume demonstrates that real letters still have an allure that virtual post struggles to replicate.

Key Features:
  • A comprehensive collection of essays on the art and genre of letter writing among Romantic, Victorian and Twentieth Century poets
  • Contributors are leading international biographers, critics and poets, including Hermione Lee, Paul Muldoon, Daniel Karlin, Hugh Haughton, Anne Fadiman, Edna Longley and Angela Leighton
  • An absorbing history of literary friendship, literary love, and literary rivalry
  • A sensitive study of the often close relationship between letter writing and poetry

Описание:

Along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, late 18th century and early 19th century English lyricist William Wordsworth was one of the most prominent poets of the Romantic era. His first work "Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems" was penned with Coleridge, though most of the volume is by Wordsworth, and its publication in 1798, is generally considered to mark the beginning of the English Romantic movement in literature. Second editions of "Lyrical Ballads" were released in 1800 and 1802. The entirety of the "Lyrical Ballads" are collected together here in this volume along with his 1807 publication "Poems, in Two Volumes" and numerous other miscellaneous poems. Wordsworth lines evoke the beauty of both nature and the commonplace everyday world. A description of Wordsworth's work may best be found in his own famous definition of poetry: "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility". This edition collects together nearly the entirety of Wordsworth's non-narrative lyrical work in a truly representative volume, printed on a premium acid-free paper, with an introduction by John Morley.

Описание: Focusing on the poems of Wordsworth's "Great Decade," feminist critics have tended to see Wordsworth as an exploiter of women and "feminine" perspectives. In this original and provocative book, Judith Page examines works from throughout Wordsworth's long career to offer a more nuanced feminist account of the poet's values. She asks questions about Wordsworth and women from the point of view of the women themselves and of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century culture. Making extensive use of family letters, journals, and other documents, as well as unpublished material by the poet's daughter Dora Wordsworth, Page presents Wordsworth as a poet not defined primarily by egotistical sublimity but by his complicated and conflicted endorsement of domesticity and familial life. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.
