Описание: According to Roth (1964), the term psychopharmakon was used for the first time by Reinhardus Lorichius of Hadamar who, in 1548, edited a collection of prayers of comfort and in preparation for death under the title Psychopharmakon, hoc est: medicina animae. With the introduction of chlorpromazine in 1952, the era of psychopharma- cology began. The psychopharmakon of the Renaissance and the twentieth century differ from each other in concept and meaning; the spiritual support in times of increased anxiety and fear has been replaced by drugs which tranquilize the agitated and brighten the mood of the depressed. Thus, the pioneering discovery by Delay et al. (1952) of the usefulness of phenothiazines in schizophrenics, followed by the report of Loomer et al. (1957) on the antidepressant effect of iproniazid and Kuhns (1957) observation of the thymoleptic property of imipramine triggered a revolution in psychiatry. Subsequently, numerous new psychopharmaka have been introduced. Parallel with this development, the interest in experimental behavioral research which began to utilize the newly discovered drugs as tools grew rapidly. The experience gained from studies of human and animal behavior found expression in the attempt to introduce a nomenclature and classify psychopharmaka on a purely psychological basis.

Описание: This book provides instruction in applying basic treatment strategies to patient care. Emphasis is placed on teachi. ng diagnostic skills, and especially, the therapeutic management of emotionally disturbed patients. This book is intended as a companion text to Basic Psychopathology: A Programmed Text, whi. ch focuses more on teaching the description and observational skills for diagnosing common psychopathologic syn- dromes. Basic Psychotherapeutics gives pragmatic suggestions for treating a variety of psychopathologic disorders, many of which are newly classi- fied in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual - III (DSM-II1) published by The American Psychiatric Association. We have adopted the terminology and many, but not all, of the diagnosti. c criteria used in DSM-III. The treatment recommendations proposed are eclectic in nature and the infor- mation presented is non-theoretical and patient centered. Basic Psychotherapeutics is divided into three parts. The first re- views basic data collection procedures and treatment skills; it includes chapters on interviewing, the mental status examination and pharmaco- logic, psychologic and behavioral therapy. The next section includes chapters on commonly encountered psychiatric syndromes such as schiz- ophrenic, affective and anxiety disorders. The final chapters are pre- sentations of special clinical interest, such as the management of suicidal patients, psychiatric emergencies, treating the dying patient and his family, and others.

Описание:

Good communication between the doctor and patient is essential for the patient to establish a trusting relationship with their doctor and to make the best use of the appropriate treatment. Traditional methods for teaching communication skills have focused on simulated clinical situations in which students learn how to improve their communication, with actors playing the part of the patients, rather than from live experiences with patients. Psychodynamic psychotherapy, with its emphasis on learning to reflect on experiences, offers the student the possibility of learning from a real experience with a patient. Such opportunities allow students to learn directly about patients' emotions, as well as to appreciate their own emotional responses to illness and to communicate better with their patients.

In this book, Peter Shoenberg, Jessica Yakeley, and their contributors who include students and teachers, discuss two different teaching approaches developed at University College London to help medical students understand the role of emotions in illness, communicate more effectively, and gain a deeper understanding of the doctor patient relationship. The benefits of Ball, Wolff and Tredgold's Student Psychotherapy Scheme are considered alongside Shoenberg and Suckling's short term student Balint discussion group scheme to provide clear guidance about how psychotherapeutic understanding can be used to inform medical education, with positive results.

At a time when medicine is becoming increasingly technological and there is a growing demand by the public for more psychologically minded doctors, this book will be a key resource for physicians, general practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists who are involved in medical teaching and for medical students.
