Описание: A collection of matrices is said to be triangularizable if there is an invertible matrix S such that S1 AS is upper triangular for every A in the collection. This
generalization of commutativity is the subject of many classical theorems due to Engel, Kolchin, Kaplansky, McCoy and others. The concept has been extended to collections of
bounded linear operators on Banach spaces: such a collection is defined to be triangularizable if there is a maximal chain of subspaces of the Banach space, each of which is invariant
under every member of the collection.
Most of the classical results have been generalized to compact operators, and there are also recent theorems in the finite-dimensional
case. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of triangularizability in both the finite and infinite-dimensional cases. It contains numerous very recent results and new proofs of
many of the classical theor
ms.
It provides a thorough background for research in both the linear-algebraic and operator-theoretic aspects of triangularizability and related areas. More generally, the
book will be useful to anyone interested in matrices or operators, as many of the results are linked to other topics such as spectral mapping theorems, properties of spectral radii and
traces, and the structure of semigroups and algebras of operators. It is essentially self-contained modulo solid courses in linear algebra (for the first half) and functional analysis (for the
second half), and is therefore suitable as a text or reference for a graduate course.

Описание: Thirty years ago, our attention was drawn to the alphabetical incom- itances in strabismus. As an elevation in adduction is the most frequent incomitance, we decided to start treating these incomitances. A weak- ening procedure of the inferior oblique muscle seemed indicated. How- ever, since we wanted to prevent a torsional overcorrection with a head tilt, we displaced the scleral insertion of the oblique muscle towards the equator of the globe. This way, the torsional action of the muscles is saved. A weakening of the horizontal rectus muscles was systematically added, making it a simultaneous horizontal and cyclovertical surgery. Our way to deal with strabismus developed into a coherent entity and the interest of colleagues encouraged us to write it down.We decided to publish a textbook with a theoretical and an extensive practical part. Our approach is based on thirty years of exclusive strabological work, half-time academic and half-time private practice. More than 6500 re- sults were analysed and the majority have been published. The con- cerned publications are referred to at the end of the first chapter. Private practice allowed to benefit from the fact that patients were operated on by the same surgeon and remained in personal contact during follow-up.

Описание: In their review of the "Bayesian analysis of simultaneous equation systems", Dr ze and Richard (1983) - hereafter DR - express the following viewpoint about the present state of development of the Bayesian full information analysis of such sys- tems i) the method allows "a flexible specification of the prior density, including well defined noninformative prior measures"; ii) it yields "exact finite sample posterior and predictive densities". However, they call for further developments so that these densities can be eval- uated through 'numerical methods, using an integrated software packa e. To that end, they recommend the use of a Monte Carlo technique, since van Dijk and Kloek (1980) have demonstrated that "the integrations can be done and how they are done". In this monograph, we explain how we contribute to achieve the developments suggested by Dr ze and Richard. A basic idea is to use known properties of the porterior density of the param- eters of the structural form to design the importance functions, i. e. approximations of the posterior density, that are needed for organizing the integrations.
