Описание: The International Symposium on Hearing is a triennial, highly-prestigious event where world-class scientists present and discuss the most recent advances in the field of hearing research in animals and humans. The symposium focuses on the relationship between auditory physiology, psychoacoustics, and computational modeling. Presented papers range from basic to applied research, and are published in book format. The books from past editions have a large demand by neuroscientists, otolaryngologists, psychologists, and artificial intelligence researchers. This book would detail the 2009 symposium and Springer will continue it`s involvement with the symposium as Springer has published the two previous symposia proceedings.

Описание: It is well known that the biochemical processes of life on Earth are maintained by the external solar radiation and can be reduced to the synthesis and decomposition of organic matter. Man has added the synthesis and decomposition of various in- dustrial products to these natural processes. On one hand, biological synthesis may only be conducted within the rather narrow margins of parameters of the environ- ment, including temperature, humidity, concentrations of the inorganic substances used by life (such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, etc.) On the other hand, the physical and chemical composition of the environment suffers significant changes during those processes of synthesis and decomposition. The maximum possible rate of such change due to the activity of living beings can exceed the average geophysical rates of change of the environment due to activity ofterrestrial depths and cosmic processes by a factor often thousand. In the absence of a rigid correlation between the biological synthesis and decomposition, the environment would be greatly disturbed within a decade and driven into a state unfit for life. A lifeless Earth, however would suffer similar changes only after about a hundred thousand years. Preservation of the existing state of the environment is only possible with strict equality between the rates of biological synthesis and decomposition, that is, when the biochemical cycles of matter are virtually closed.

Описание: This volume encompasses the Proceedings of the First International Colloquium on Physical and Chemical Information Transfer and Regulation of Reproduction and Ageing (Colloquium '74-PCITRRA), held at the F. Joliot- Curie International House of Scientists, Varna, Bulgaria, October 7-14. This international event was made possible by the financial support afforded by the International Union of Biochemistry through Doctor P.N. Campbell, the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics through Doctor R.D. Keynes, UNESCO, and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The characteristic and stimulating feature of the Colloquium'74-PCITRRA was the interdisciplinary audience (physicists, biologists, physicians, chemists, mathema- ticians, engineers) and the orientation to information transfer and biological recognition in ageing. The at- tention was focused on receptor transformation, espe- cially that in ageing. Of special interest were the mathematical models and the theoretical basis of bio-information transfer, the age changes of the receptor recognition, the chemi- cal information transfer in development, the hormone- hormone interaction envisaged in their biophysical and biochemical aspects. The Colloquium '74 provided a very frank, critical and stimulating atmosphere for work and discussion on the latest results and concepts in topics of interest. The active role of the chairmen, Doctors. H.R. Arnstein, H.-J. Bartels, M. Blecher, J.A. Edwardson, M.R.P. Hall, E.V. Jensen, B.B. Saxena, J.R. Tata, and Ya.M. Varshavsky, was a great contribution in this respect and we would like to express our gratitude to them.

Описание: This CTR-Special is on one of the most exciting topics in the neurosciences, the regulation of axonal growth during development and in the injured nervous system by attraction and repulsion. The implications of this topic extend far beyond developmental neurobiology into the fields of applied medicine, clinical neurology and related disciplines.
