Описание: This volume is devoted to mathematical models of the cortex. It begins with a short history of models of cortical neurons and circuitry that introduces the principal modelling styles. An attempt has been made throughout the book to make it accessible to readers with minimal mathematical background.

Описание: More recently, non- invasive imaging of cortical activity patterns during visual tasks has led to an expanding stream of papers on extrastriate visual cortex of humans, and results have been related to theories of visual cortex organization that have emerged from research on monkeys.

Описание: The afferent connections of the cerebellar cortex of the cat have been extensively in- vestigated by Alf Brodal and his collaborators using retrograde degeneration methods. These experiments (reviewed in Larsell and Jansen 1972) established that cerebellar corti- cal afferents arise from widespread areas of the brain stem and spinal cord. Brain stem nuclei shown to provide input to the cerebellar cortex included the pontine nuclei, the medial and descending vestibular nuclei, vestibular cell group x, the lateral reticular nucleus, the perihypoglossal nuclei, the paramedian reticular nucleus, the inferior olive, and the external cuneate nucleus. In addition, the red nucleus and certain of the raphe nuclei were thought to send fibers to the intracerebellar nuclei, but not to the cortex. With the advent of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique, new information on the distribution and organization of cerebellar cortical afferents has recently be- come available. Thus Gould and Graybiel (1976) demonstrated that afferents to the cat cerebellar cortex arise from a previously undescribed lateral tegmental cell group at the level of the isthmus and from the intracerebellar nuclei, as well as from the classic precerebellar nuclei. Moreover, these studies showed that fibers from the vestibular nuclei, previously thought to be distributed only to the flocculonodular lobe and uvula, reach widespread areas of the cerebellar cortex. Experiments by other investi- gators have established that the cerebellar cortex of the cat receives afferents from cer- tain of the raphe nuclei (Shinnar et al. 1975; Taber Pierce et al.

Описание: The clinical electrophysiology of the human somatosensory cortex was investigated with a combined approach using cortical stimulations and somatosensory evoked responses on electrocorticography, scalp-EEG, and magnetoencephalography. This work studied the spatiotemporal structure of the evoked response with biophysical modeling techniques.

Описание: The way you perceive the world, plan, make decisions and communicate your thoughts and feelings depends on the function and hierarchical arrangement of cortical modules. The ability to both provide adaptive responses to our ever-changing environment and to pursue a useful role in society is the most important problem faced by present day neuroscientists. In essence, the workings of cortical modules define the nature of our soul, making each of us who we are. This book provides a breath-taking view of different perspectives by world renowned authorities as to the workings of these cortical modules both in the normal state and in mental disorders.

Описание: Presents the developments in motor cortex research. This book focuses on how neuronal activity changes during learning, discusses what the motor cortex encodes for, and covers the neuronal representations of voluntary movements and the mechanism of their generation during learning.
