Описание: These experi- mental results provide a rational basis for a possible therapeutic use of electrical stimulation of nerve and muscle. Before electrical stimulation can be accepted as a therapeutic tool, we felt it necessary to summarize the effects of activity in normal and diseased muscle and nerve.

Описание: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment is increasingly being used in the management of patients with depression. Side-effects of treatment are explored, and careful consideration is given to the establishment of rTMS treatment programs and the training of clinicians.

Описание: Transcranial stimulation comprises an important set of techniques for investigating brain function, some of which are showing the promise of treating disease. This book provides the definitive review of the scientific and technical background required to understand transcranial stimulation, for neuroscientists, neurologists, and psychiatrists.

Описание: An iconoclast in-depth analysis of the current understanding of DBS: efficacy, safety, indications, selection criteria and post-operative management. This book is an epistemic analysis of the presumptions, assumptions and fallacies. It provides the revolutionary potential and the complexity of DBS in changing healthcare delivery; the ethics are discussed in detail.
Описание: This book examines the scientific principles and practical applications of electrotherapy. It explains how electrical stimulation activates and transforms muscle, how it works on the cardiovascular system compared to active exercise and how it can be used.
Описание: This textbook covers virtually every aspect of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring during Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery beginning with what is an electron to how to decide whether a given trajectory is optimal for DBS lead placement and if not, where is the optimal trajectory likely to be.

Описание: This concise guide to deep brain stimulation (DBS) outlines a practical approach to the use of this paradigm-shifting therapy for neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Fully revised throughout, the new edition provides extensive information about the application of DBS to movement disorders, and includes new chapters on DBS to treat epilepsy and psychiatric conditions. With the evolution of surgical techniques for DBS lead implantation, a brand new section focused on interventional MRI approaches is also included. All key aspects of DBS practice are covered, including patient selection, device programming to achieve optimal symptom control, long-term management, and troubleshooting. It is a guide to be kept in the clinic and consulted in the course of managing patients being considered for, or treated with, DBS. With contributions from some of the most experienced clinical leaders in the field, this is a must-have reference guide for any clinician working with DBS patients.
Описание: This book, the first in the field, provides a tool for pediatric anesthesiologists to learn and master the skill of ultrasound and nerve stimulation for regional anesthesia in children. The text focuses on differences between pediatric and adult patients.

Описание: The Clinical Guide will serve as a reference tool for clinicians in the administration of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for neuropsychiatric disorders. The primary intent of this Guide is to focus on the clinical applications of TMS and to offer detailed information on the safe and effective administration of TMS.
Описание: Iterative learning control (ILC) has its origins in the control of processes that perform a task repetitively with a view to improving accuracy from trial to trial by using information from previous executions of the task. This brief shows how a classic application of this technique – trajectory following in robots – can be extended to neurological rehabilitation after stroke. Regaining upper limb movement is an important step in a return to independence after stroke, but the prognosis for such recovery has remained poor. Rehabilitation robotics provides the opportunity for repetitive task-oriented movement practice reflecting the importance of such intense practice demonstrated by conventional therapeutic research and motor learning theory. Until now this technique has not allowed feedback from one practice repetition to influence the next, also implicated as an important factor in therapy. The authors demonstrate how ILC can be used to adjust external functional electrical stimulation of patients’ muscles while they are repeatedly performing a task in response to the known effects of stimulation in previous repetitions. As the motor nerves and muscles of the arm reaquire the ability to convert an intention to move into a motion of accurate trajectory, force and rapidity, initially intense external stimulation can now be scaled back progressively until the fullest possible independence of movement is achieved.
