Описание: Two decades have elapsed since the publication of the earliest study from this clinic 13 concerning arteriovenous aneurysms. Moreover, we shall attempt in this monograph to concentrate primarily upon our own clinical material, the largest series published to date, rather than prepare an exhaustive survey 63 of the literature.
Описание: Congenital cardiovascular malformations are the single most common form of birth defect. Therefore a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in both normal cardiac development and the formation of cardiovascular structural defects is of tremendous importance. This book brings together the leading scientists from around the world who are actively engaged in studies of the etiology, morphogenesis and physiology of congenital cardiovascular diseases. A broad variety of approaches, techniques, experimental models and studies of human genetics combine to make this a truly outstanding and unique treatise on this pressing topic. Cardiovascular Development and Congenital Malformations is divided into distinct categories, each focusing on a particular aspect of cardiovascular development. Sections are accompanied by editorial overviews which integrate new findings and place the information into a broader context.

Описание: ?This book presents results obtained from the whole mount preparations, radiological, and histological studies of 60 pu/pu and pu/+ mice from late embryo until 3 months of age. Most mice were in the embryo to 6 week age group where vertebral developmental changes are most marked. Although vertebral abnormalities have been identified as due to mutations in the delta-like 3 (Dll3) gene, it is evident that each mouse has differing structural abnormalities. The disorder is analogous to human congenital scoliosis, a common variant of which is spondylocostal dysplasia. The histological studies presented in this book include plastic embedded sections which allow for high level resolution not only of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and ribs but also of associated spinal cord, nerve roots and ganglia. In addition an overview of embryo and neonatal development in mouse, chick and human vertebrae is provided to better assess how and where deviant pathoanatomy occurs. The book discusses the possible variables involved in creating final deformity beyond the gene abnormality itself.

Описание: This book, the result of close collaboration between two very specialized centers, one in spinal surgery, the other in oncology, was written to take stock of the current data on vertebral metastases. It is intended as both a pratical guide for all those involved in this field of care and a didactic reference for those who are less familiar with either of these specialties. All aspects of current knowledge of metastases are considered. Regarding diagnostics, MRI is at present indispensable and nessecitates a broad iconography. In the therapeutics section, so as to restituate vertebral metastasis in its proper general context, a chapter is devoted to the particularities of the treatment in terms of the primary cancer. This is fundamental since the sensitivity of tumors to systemic treatment is clearly not the same from one case to another. The role of surgery in vertebral metastases has changed completely over the last ten years with the increasing use osteosynthesis combined with decompressive procedures. The explanation of these techniques and their indications is largely based upon providing a suitable response to the mechanical problems posed at each location in the spinal column. Vertebroplasty and biphosphonates, two recent additions to the therapeutic armamentarium are detailed, along with conventional treatments such as radiation therapy and the comprehensive approach to pain management. In the present context of technological advances against vertebral metastases, physicians must not lose sight of the patient as an individual. This imperative prompted us to include a chapter on nursing and psychological cared. Another chapter addresses the continuity of care, placing responsability for the patient's management at present solely in the hands of a multidisciplinary team. A methodological review of the literature concludes that there still remains much work to be done for better assessment of the responsability for the welfare of these patients. Two leading US spinal surgeons have accepted to endorse this manuscript: J.P. Farcy and N. Sundaresan. The question of their contributing to the book was naturally raised. However, it seemed preferable to preserve the homogenous spirit driving the original group of collaborators.

Описание: Originally published in 1933, this book is a culmination of a lifetime of research by Hans Friedrich Gadow into the evolution of the vertebrae. Gadow outlines the various forms of vertebral development as a guide to larger and more general questions on the morphological scheme of the evolution of vertebrate creatures.
