Описание: This volume contains summaries of lectures and contributed papers delivered at an International Summer School on "Dynamical Phenomena at Surfaces, I nterfaces and Superl atti ces" hel d at the Ettore Maj orana Centre for Sci en- tific Culture, Erice (Sicily), Italy, July 1-13, 1984. The School was orga- ni zed under the auspi ces of the Surfaces and Interfaces Secti on of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society as the sixth course in the series on Materials Science and Technology. Approximately 60 parti c i pants from all regi ons of Europe, the Uni ted States, and further afield - Hong Kong, China, India - were able to take part in a program of 45 lectures and 11 contributed talks, which covered most of the solid-state aspects of the subject. In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in the proper- ties of carefully prepared surfaces, interfaces, and multilayer thin films. This advance in research has received its impetus from the technological re- levance of surfaces and interfacial phenomena associated with heterogeneous catalysis, corrosion, and, particularly, new developments in microelectronics. One of the most important developments to emerge over the past decade has been our ability to prepare ultra-thin structures at the submicron level, i. e., to engineer low-dimensional solids at the atomic-scale level.

Описание: A NATO workshop on "The Properties of Impurity States in Semiconductor Superlattices" was held at the University of Essex, Colchester, United Kingdom, from September 7 to 11, 1987. Doped semiconductor superlattices not only provide a unique opportunity for studying low dimensional electronic behavior, they can also be custom-designed to exhibit many other fascinating el ctronic properties. The possibility of using these materials for new and novel devices has further induced many astonishing advances, especially in recent years. The purpose of this workshop was to review both advances in the state of the art and recent results in various areas of semiconductor superlattice research, including: (i) growth and characterization techniques, (ii) deep and shallow im- purity states, (iii) quantum well states, and (iv) two-dimensional conduction and other novel electronic properties. This volume consists of all the papers presented at the workshop. Chapters 1-6 are concerned with growth and characterization techniques for superlattice semiconductors. The question of a-layer is also discussed in this section. Chapters 7-15 contain a discussion of various aspects of the impurity states. Chapters 16- 22 are devoted to quantum well states. Finally, two-dimensional conduction and other electronic properties are described in chapters 23-26.

Описание: Lasers are playing a more and more dominant role in modern optical spec- troscopy, offering an increased potential for high resolution and, thus, for more detailed spectroscopic information on dynamic and structural param- eters. This book on Zero-Phonon Lines and Spectral Hole Burning in Spec- troscopy and Photochemistry gives a concise and very useful survey of some of the pioneering and current work on solid state spectroscopy of various groups in the USSR. It focusses on the optical Mossbauer analogue, the "zero-phonon line," and "hole burning" spectroscopy, a method which increases the resolu- tion well beyond the zero-phonon linewidth. In this conte. . 'Ct, the present work is complementary to Persistent Spectral Hole-Burning: Science and Applica- tions (ed. by W. E. Moerner, Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg 1988), which deals in more detail with the various aspects of laser spectroscopy with ultrahigh spectral resolution. Zero-phonon lines and an understanding of the various phonon coupling mechanisms which are treated in this book are a prerequi- site for applying and understanding techniques of ultrahigh resolution such as hole-burning or optical echoes. Bayreuth, March 1988 D. Haarer Preface The investigation of zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) is one of the foremost and most informative fields of present-day condensed-matter spectroscopy. Along with its definite function in physical cognition and investigation methods, the spectroscopy of ZPLs is also gaining purely practical applications. This is due to the fact that ZPLs are extra-sensitive quantum-mechanical detectors.

Описание: The thesis presents experimental and theoretical results about the surface dynamics and the surface Dirac fermion (DF) spectral function of the strong topological insulators Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3. The experimental results reveal the presence of a strong Kohn anomaly in the measured surface phonon dispersion of a low-lying optical mode, and the absence of surface Rayleigh acoustic phonons. Fitting the experimental data to theoretical models employing phonon Matsubara functions allowed the extraction of the matrix elements of the coupling Hamiltonian and the modifications to the surface phonon propagator that are encoded in the phonon self-energy. This allowed, for the first time, calculation of phonon mode-specific DF coupling ??(q) from experimental data, with average coupling significantly higher than typical values for metals, underscoring the strong coupling between optical surface phonons and surface DFs in topological insulators. Finally, to connect to experimental results obtained from photoemission spectroscopies, an electronic (DF) Matsubara function was constructed using the determined electron-phonon matrix elements and the optical phonon dispersion. This allowed calculation of the DF spectral function and density of states, allowing for comparison with photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The results set the necessary energy resolution and extraction methodology for calculating ? from the DF perspective.
