Описание: Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. Bowever, the tree of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programmi ng profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as completely integrable systems, chaos, synergetics and large-s.cale order, which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classifica- tion schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathe- matics.

Описание: In recent years there has been growing interest in the study of the nonlinear spatio-temporal dynamics of problems appearing in various ?elds of science and engineering. In a wide class of such systems an important place is - cupied by active lattice dynamical systems. Active lattice systems are, e. g., networks of identical or almost identical interacting units ordered in space. The activity of lattices is provided by the activity of units in them that possess energy or matter sources. In real (1D, 2D or 3D) space, processes develop by means of various types of connections, the simplest being di?usion. The uniqueness of lattice systems is that they represent spatially extended systems while having a ?nite-dimensional phase space. Therefore, active lattice s- tems are of interest for the study of multidimensional dynamical systems and the theory of nonlinear waves and dissipative structures of extended systems as well. The theory of nonlinear waves and dissipative structures of spatially distributed systems demands using theoretical methods and approaches of the qualitative theory of dynamical systems, bifurcation theory, and numerical methods or computer experiments. In other words, the investigation of spat- temporal dynamics in active lattice systems demands a multitool, synergetic approach, which we shall use in this book.

Описание: This book is placed at the interface between string theory and elementary particle physics and shows novel results in the search for a heterotic string vacuum that reproduces those matter particles and interactions observed in our universe. The author provides a systematic classification of potentially realistic heterotic covariant lattice vacua, which possess a lower number of moduli fields when compared to conventional compactification methods, by means of number theoretical methods. These methods, while well known to the mathematics community, have not yet found many applications to physics. They are introduced to the degree necessary to understand the computations carried out throughout this work. Furthermore, explicit covariant lattice models with particularly interesting properties are analyzed in detail. Finally, new light is shed on the relation between covariant lattice models and asymmetric orbifold compactifications, the result being a concrete correspondence between certain types of asymmetric orbifolds and those classified covariant lattices.

This highly interdisciplinary thesis covers a wide range of topics relating to the interface of cold atoms, quantum simulation, quantum magnetism and disorder. With a self-contained presentation, it provides a broad overview of the rapidly evolving area of cold atoms and is of interest to both undergraduates and researchers working in the field.
Starting with a general introduction to the physics of cold atoms and optical lattices, it extends the theory to that of systems with different multispecies atoms. It advances the theory of many-body quantum systems in excited bands (of optical lattices) through an extensive study of the properties of both the mean-field and strongly correlated regimes. Particular emphasis is given to the context of quantum simulation, where as shown here, the orbital degree of freedom in excited bands allows the study of exotic models of magnetism not easily achievable with the previous alternative systems. In addition, it proposes a new model Hamiltonian that serves as a quantum simulator of various disordered systems in different symmetry classes that can easily be reproduced experimentally. This is of great interest, especially for the study of disorder in 2D quantum systems.

Описание: Vector lattices-also called Riesz spaces, K-lineals, or linear lattices-were first considered by F. Riesz, L. Kantorovic, and H. Freudenthal in the middle nineteen thirties; thus their early theory dates back almost as far as the beginning of the systematic investigation of Banach spaces. Schools of research on vector lattices were subsequently founded in the Soviet Union (Kantorovic, Judin, Pinsker, Vulikh) and in Japan (Nakano, Ogasawara, Yosida); other important contri- butions came from the United States (G. Birkhoff, Kakutani, M. H. Stone). L. Kantorovic and his school first recognized the importance of studying vector lattices in connection with Banach's theory of normed vector spaces; they investigated normed vector lattices as well as order-related linear operators between such vector lattices. (Cf. Kantorovic-Vulikh-Pinsker 1950] and Vulikh 1967].) However, in the years following that early period, functional analysis and vector lattice theory began drifting more and more apart; it is my impression that "linear order theory" could not quite keep pace with the rapid development of general functional analysis and thus developed into a theory largely existing for its own sake, even though it had interesting and beautiful applications here and there.
