Studying the macrosections with unaided eyes, with a simple magnifier or binocular microscope might be of great help to accomplish traditional anatomical studies and to establish a certain spatial experience/space perception. Описание: Since the publication of the second volume of Comparative Psychology by Warden, Warner, and Jenkins (1940), there has not been a comprehensive review of invertebrate learning capacities. Some high-quality reviews have appeared in various journals, texts, and symposia, but they have been, of necessity, incomplete and selective either in terms of the phyla covered or the phenomena which were reviewed. Although this lack has served as a stimulus for the present series, the primary justification is to be found in the resurgence of theoretical and empirical interests in learning capacities and mechanisms in simpler systems of widely different phylogenetic origin. Intensive research on the physiological basis of learning and memory clearly entails exploration of the correlations between levels of nervous system organization and be- havioral plasticity. Furthermore, the presence of structural-functional differ- entiation in ganglionated systems, the existence of giant, easily identifiable cells, and the reduced complexity of structure and behavior repertoires are among the advantages of the simple systems strategy which have caused many neuroscientists to abandon their cats, rats, and monkeys in favor of mollusks, leeches, planaria, crayfish, protozoa, and other invertebrate preparations. Behavioral research continues to reveal remarkable capacities in these simple organisms and encourages us to believe that the confluence of the invertebrate learning data with the more voluminous vertebrate litera- ture will contribute substantially to the enrichment of all of the neurobe- havioral sciences.
Описание: The neuroendocrine control of reproduction and development of inver- tebrates has a long tradition as an important area of research in France. The reader of this volume is certainly familiar with the significant con- tributions to this field made by such outstanding scientific personalities as J ean-J acques Bounhiol, Jean Panouse, Bernard Possompes, Pierre and Line Joly, Helene Charniaux-Cotton, Maurice Durchon, Manfred Gabe, Guy Echalier, Marie Raabe, and others. It is therefore not surprising that the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) sponsored, in 1975 and 1983, two major inter- national meetings devoted to this subject. The organizers of the 1975 meeting, which was held in Lille, decided to concentrate on the bio- synthesis, metabolism, and mode of action of the invertebrate hor- mones. To some extent, Professors Durchon and J oly wanted to convey the message that they felt that the period of classical invertebrate endo- crinology had come to an end and that traditional approaches were be- ing replaced by biochemical analyses. How right they were is illustrated by the present volume. Today biochemistry, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry are tools of the invertebrate endocrinologist, who now starts his morning work by homogenizing his worm, mollusc, insect . . . and by extracting DNA, steroids, or peptides.

Описание: The international conference on "Invertebrate Oxygen Carriers" took place from July 29th to August 1st, 1985, at Tutzing, in a pleasant setting on Lake Starn- berg. It was the 8th in a series which started in 1966 with a meeting in Naples on the "Physiology and Biochemistry of Haemocyanins" organized by F. Ghiretti. The list of contributors and participants of the Naples meeting reports thirty names among which we find that of A. C. Redfield, a pioneer of this field. In Tutzing over 100 scientists came together to discuss their research on all types of oxygen transporting proteins. Clearly the invertebrate hemoglobins have received increasing attention, and a more unified view of their complex quaternary structure is emerging. Their sequences are becoming unravelled and their functions more rationally understood. Hemerythrins have been covered, and their mechanism of binding oxygen explained lucidly. In the hemocyanin field there were exiting new results at every structural level - the X-ray structure of Panulirus hemocyanin, a wealth of sequence data for both arthropodan and molluscan types of hemocyanin, the molecular dimension of native hemocyanins provided by cryo-electron microscopy. New insights into the evolution of copper proteins have been obtained. There are new approaches to explain allosteric interaction in such complicated systems. The scope of investigations reaches from molecular genetics to organismic physiology. The conference received major support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and from the Bayerisches Staatsministerium fUr Unterricht und Kultus.
