Описание: Supporting Families of Children with Developmental Disabilities: Evidence-based and Emerging Practices provides a comprehensive review of the empirical evidence on interventions for families of individuals - ranging from post-preschool age to adulthood - with developmental disabilities. The book presents both narrative and meta-analytic syntheses of a large body of research to evaluate which interventions meet contemporary standards as evidence based practices. The body of studies reviewed in the book has not previously been gathered into one volume, nor evaluated as a whole for the quality and extent of the evidence. The research is presented in the context of contemporary social policy and practices aimed at maximizing the development of children with disabilities while increasing the quality of life of their families. The criteria and procedures followed for identifying, reviewing, evaluating, and categorizing the studies are articulated in line with other major professional standards. Individual chapters focus on several different schools of practice, including: group psycho-educational interventions, behavioral parent training, multiple component interventions, supportive interventions for families of children with autism, home- and school-based practices, self-help groups, and advocacy programs. Supporting Families of Children with Developmental Disabilities is an important tool for moving the disability field forward for future research, practice, and social policy.

Описание:

Research on the academic and social impairments related to disruptive behavior disorders, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), suggests that youth with these disorders are at unusually high risk for school failure, school dropout, significant behavior problems, social rejection, and alcohol/substance abuse and dependence when compared to their peers. Clearly, effective interventions for this population are essential. However, research also suggests that due in part to deficits in executive functioning (e.g., memory, organization, planning), youth with disruptive behavior disorders are unlikely to benefit from interventions drawing strictly from cognitive or insight-based therapies. Therefore, the literature regarding counseling and therapy for adolescents seems to divide along two general lines: 1) a rich and growing counseling literature on internalizing disorders (e.g., CBT for social anxiety) and transition planning (e.g., college and career counseling), and 2) an equivocal counseling literature on externalizing disorders, where theory, research, and practice are rarely integrated.

The proposed book bridges the gaps in the literature by integrating research and practice specific to the difficulties experienced by adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders. Much of our discussion will be based on our research of the Challenging Horizons Program and the High School Treatment Development Project conducted at James Madison University. During the course of these studies, graduate and undergraduate students have been trained to build alliances with adolescents, their teachers, and their families for the purpose of implementing evidence-based interventions. Counseling Adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders describes this process in detail--drawing directly from the research and the relevant literature--with a focus on how this research can inform practice.

This therapeutic approach is best described as "solution-focused" because it uses a trans-theoretical model, similar to that advocated by Steve de Shazer, John J. Murphy, and others. Counseling Adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders builds on this tradition by describing how these concepts and techniques can be applied to youth with disruptive behaviors, while providing the reader with specific intervention ideas, troubleshooting strategies, and research findings from these studies and others.

Описание:

This book examines a group-based adaptation of the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) designed for use with preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It describes the principles and procedures of the Group-Based Early Start Denver Model (G-ESDM) and provides practical and empirical guidelines for implementing effective, affordable programs across public healthcare and educational settings. Chapters offer rationales and strategies for designing and evaluating interventions, building interdisciplinary teams, and organizing learning spaces to engage student interest. Examples discuss the social interactions in groups that provide opportunities for learning, improving interpersonal skills, and reducing problem behaviors. In addition, the book offers ideas for retooling teaching strategies when an individual child lags behind the rest of the group.
Featured topics include:
Creating treatment objectives in the G-ESDM.Setting up the G-ESDM team and learning environment. Development of the G-ESDM classroom curriculum. Practical tools such as decision-making trees, teaching templates, and fidelity systems. Facilitating learning through peer interactions and social participation.
Implementing the Group-Based Early Start Denver Model for Preschoolers with Autism is a must-have resource for clinicians and practitioners as well as researchers, professors, and graduate students in the fields of child and school psychology, behavioral therapy, and social work along with psychiatry, pediatrics, and educational and healthcare policy.

Описание: Emerging approaches to treating addictions and minimizing relapse are spotlighted in this idea-packed volume, as alternatives or adjuncts to standard psychological and pharmacological therapies. Its biopsychosocial perspective delves into the causes and processes of chemical dependence, and the clinical characteristics it shares with other addictions (e.g., food, sex, gambling, online activities), to identify client needs that substance abuse may fulfill. Accordingly, the diverse modalities featured here address substance addiction on multiple levels, offering clients physical or mental stimulation and/or emotional relief as well as affording different degrees of autonomy. Methods can be mixed and matched to reinforce treatment goals, and clinicians can tailor treatment to individual issues and interests to assure clients nuanced and meaningful care. Included in the coverage: · Use of herbal medicine to treat drug addiction.· EMDR therapy and the treatment of substance abuse and addiction.· Evaluating the change processes in drug users’ interventions.· Web-based interventions for substance abuse.· Physical exercise and treatment of addiction.· Mindfulness to reduce the anxiety during the abstinence· Neurofeedback to deal with craving and anxiety symptoms Psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and addiction counselors and educators will find Innovations in the Treatment of Substance Addiction a valuable sourcebook for understanding addiction—and intervention—in its wider context.
