Описание: This book records the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on cancer topics organised in collaboration with the Association for International Cancer Research, a cancer charity based in the United Kingdom. The Symposium was held at the Klinikum Steglitz, Free University of West Berlin, Germany, between 1 and 3 October 1987. The Organising and Scientific Committees are deeply grateful to the President of the Free University, Professor Heckelmann, for allowing us to meet in the Klinikum Steglitz and for the University's generous financial support. Описание: The First International Symposium on Drugs Affecting Lipid Metabolism was held in Milan in 1960. In the succeeding symposia, as in the first, new data and new ideas emerged which stimulated further research in the field. The present volume comprises the proceedings of the Fifth Symposium. In the area of lipoproteins, we have progressed from descriptions of their chemistry to dis- cus sion of their physiology and of their control of cholesterol metabolism at the cellular level. Workshop sessions explored thrombosis as affected by drugs, risk factors other than diet, animal models for atherosclerosis research and the organization of lipid clinics and clinical trials. All these topics represent advances in knowledge over the last decade. In the area of drugs a number of new compounds were introduced, many of them offer- ing new structural concepts for hypocholesteremic activity. We expect that the next Symposium will offer as many new hypotheses and avenues of approach as did this one. Описание: This volume, the fourth in the series "The Prostagiandin System", contains most of the presentations at the International School of Pharmacology on "Drugs Effecting Leukotrienes and other Eicosanoid pathways" held in Erice, Sicily, at the "Ettore Majorana Center" on 9-20 September 1984. The discovery of a new class of biologically active compounds is always exciting even if at the present time knowledge is advancing very rapidly; this is particu1arly true for the eicosanoids. Evidence for a pivotal role of arachidonic acid as a precursor of mediators and modulators of various cell functions is now weil established. This broad knowledge has stimulated the search for drugs capable of interfering with the eicosanoid system and since the discovery of the mechanism of action of Aspirin, new drugs have become available in order to act more specifica11y not only at the level of different enzymes involved in arachidonic acid conversion but also more selectively at the receptor si tes where the acti ve metaboli tes are effecti ve. In addition to this, several stable synthetic derivatives of endogenous unstable prostanoids mimicking their functions in a variety of physiopatho19gical processes are also of potential therapeutic interest. This volume will certainly help scientists and students wi th different interests related to those diseases that stern from arachidonic acid metabolites interactions in hypersensitivity phenomena and in host defence mechanisms.
