Make it Shine is a celebration and appreciation of language diversity and poetic forms such as dub-wise and narrative poetry poised for performance. The reader becomes engaged through the rhythms of speech and humour whilst identifying with a character or situation. At times, the reader is led to a place of self-reflection through such themes as spiritual and cultural identity, transition, adoption, bullying, love, perseverance, resilience and renewal.
Within the Make It Shine collection, you will find poems that celebrate Black heroines and heroes from our past and present thus acknowledging the existence and rich legacy of ancient civilizations well before the transatlantic slave trade. Here, the spoken voice echoes the invitation to those who are willing to 'shine' encouraging them to go that extra mile to achieve their future aspirations.
As well as entertaining her audience with her crafted use of Caribbean dialect and humorous reflections of 'small days', Make It Shine will not only inspire but will provide moments of appreciation for the rich culturally diverse beginnings that salute our heritage.
Описание: This book addresses the many interlocking problems in understanding the modes of performance, dissemination, and transmission of Greek poetry of the seventh to the fifth centuries BC whose first performers were a choral group, sometimes singing in a ritual context, sometimes in more secular celebrations of victories in competitive games. It explores the different ways such a group presented itself and was perceived by its audiences; the place of tyrants, of other prominent individuals and of communities in commissioning and funding choral performances and in securing the further circulation of the songs' texts and music; the social and political role of choral songs and the extent to which such songs continued to be performed both inside and outside the immediate family and polis-community, whether chorally or in archaic Greece's important cultural engine, the elite male symposium, with the consequence that Athenian theatre audiences could be expected to appreciate allusion to or reworking of such poetic forms in tragedy and comedy; and how various types of performance contributed to transmission of written texts of the poems until they were collected and edited by Alexandrian scholars in the third and second centuries BC.

Описание: Youth spoken word poetry groups are on the rise in the United States, offering safe spaces for young people to write and perform. These diverse groups encourage members to share their lived experiences, decry injustices, and imagine a better future. At a time when students may find writing in school alienating and formulaic, composing in these poetry groups can be refreshingly relevant and exciting.Listen to the Poet investigates two Arizona spoken word poetry groups - a community group and a high school club - that are both part of the same youth organization. Exploring the writing lives and poetry of several members, Wendy R. Williams takes readers inside a writing workshop and poetry slam and reveals that schools have much to learn about writing, performance, community, and authorship from groups like these and from youth writers themselves.
Описание: In 1993, the term Performance Writing suggested simply writing for performance. By 2011, when the author became the first Professor of Performance Writing, it had attained a wider currency in discussions of contemporary writing, and had entered the curriculum well beyond its intense first development at the adventurous Dartington College of Arts.

Описание: The early modern Ottoman poet Mihr? Hatun (1460–1515) succeeded in drawing an admiring audience and considerable renown during a time when few women were accepted into the male-dominated intellectual circles. Her poetry collection is among the earliest bodies of women’s writing in the Middle East and Islamicate literature, providing an exceptional vantage point on intellectual history. With this volume, Havliog?lu not only gives readers access to this rare text but also investigates the factors that allowed Hatun to survive and thrive despite her clear departure from the cultural norms of the time. Placing the poet in the context of her era and environment, Havliog?lu finds that the poet’s dramatic, masterful performance and subversiveness are the very reasons for her endurance and acclaim in intellectual history. Hatun performed in a way that embraced her marginal position as a woman and leveraged it to her advantage. Havliog?lu’s astute and nuanced portrait gives readers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a woman poet in a highly gendered society and suggests that women have been part of intellectual history long before the modern period.
