Souffles-Anfas: A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics introduces and makes available, for the first time in English, an incandescent corpus of experimental leftist writing from North Africa. Founded in 1966 by Abdellatif La?bi and a small group of avant-garde Moroccan poets and artists and banned in 1972, Souffles-Anfas was one of the most influential literary, cultural, and political reviews to emerge in postcolonial North Africa. An early forum for tricontinental postcolonial thought and writing, the journal published texts ranging from experimental poems, literary manifestos, and abstract art to political tracts, open letters, and interviews by contributors from the Maghreb, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The essays, poems, and artwork included in this anthology—by the likes of Abdelkebir Khatibi, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Albert Memmi, Etel Adnan, Sembene Ousmane, Ren? Depestre, and Mohamed Melehi—offer a unique window into the political and artistic imaginaries of writers and intellectuals from the Global South, and resonate with particular acuity in the wake of the Arab Spring. A critical introduction and section headnotes make this collection the perfect companion for courses in postcolonial theory, world literature, and poetry in translation.
Since the early 1990s, new migratory patterns have been emerging in the southern Mediterranean. Here, a large number of West Africans and young Moroccans, including minors, make daily attempts to cross to Europe. The Moroccan city of Tangier, because of its proximity to Spain, is one of the main gateways for this migratory movement. It has also become a magnet for middle- and working-class Europeans seeking a more comfortable life. Based on extensive fieldwork, Living Tangier examines the dynamics of transnational migration in a major city of the Global South and studies African "illegal" migration to Europe and European "legal" migration to Morocco, looking at the itineraries of Europeans, West Africans, and Moroccan children and youth, their strategies for crossing, their motivations, their dreams, their hopes, and their everyday experiences. In the process, Abdelmajid Hannoum examines how Moroccan society has been affected by the flows of migrants from both West Africa and Europe, focusing on race relations and analyzing issues related to citizenship and social inequality. Living Tangier considers what makes the city one of the most attractive for migrants preparing to cross to Europe and illustrates not only how migrants live in the city but also how they live the city—how they experience it, encounter its people, and engage its culture, walk its streets, and participate in its events. Reflecting on his own experiences and drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt, Edward Said, Tayeb Saleh, Amin Maalouf, and Dany Laferrière, Hannoum provokes new questions in order to reconfigure migration as a postcolonial phenomenon and interrogate how Moroccan society responds to new cultural processes.

Описание: Morocco has long been a mythic land, firmly rooted in the European colonial imagination. For more than a century it has been appropriated by travellers, explorers, writers and artists.
Описание: A Most Opulent Iliad explores a tale familiar to the modern reader: The meeting of cultures under the strain of invasion and occupation. Dr. Racine's book focuses on two main themes: The strategies and tools used by Portuguese occupation forces seeking to assert their control in Morocco (and how Moroccans resisted them) and how men and women from the various cultures and levels of society negotiated their political, economic, and personal relationships within the instability created by the Portuguese invasion. As to the military and political aspects, this book chronicles the initial success of the Portuguese using overwhelming force, their occupation of Azamor and Safi and construction of Mazagao (modern El Jadida), their subsequent attempts at expansion through alliances and treaties, and their ultimate failure as the Sa adid empire coalesced into a force too strong for the Portuguese to resist. Beyond the politics and battles of the time, A Most Opulent Iliad illuminates the daily lives of the Portuguese and Moroccans who lived and worked with each other in the fortresses and territory controlled by the Portuguese. Specifically, this book looks at commercial and personal interactions, the ways members of various groups were treated, and the complex way in which local Moroccan Muslim tribal and village leaders interacted with their Portuguese overlords. The book contains detailed studies of how members of various levels of social strata interacted with each other, how Jews gained prominence as interpreters, hostage negotiators, and providers of essential supplies, how Moroccans -- both Berbers and Arabs -- succeeded or failed in their political and economic alliances with the Portuguese, how elite women served as political leaders and non-elite women worked, lived, and died in Portuguese fortresses. A Most Opulent Iliad contains detailed case studies of political negotiation and alliance between the Portuguese and influential Moroccan tribes, extensive discussion of how the Portuguese fortresses were able to keep supplied with food, and how construction of fortresses and the buildings within them was financed. The book also contains an analysis of the use of violence in the region, including how hostages were used as collateral for treaties and the symbolic and economic currency attached to Moroccan and Portuguese captives. By examining both underutilized printed documents and extensive archival sources, A Most Opulent Iliad demonstrates that what is known about the political relations between Portuguese kings and Moroccan sultans tells very little of the story of the politics and people during this brief but initially highly-effective colonial occupation. This book fills a large gap in the history of Portugal and the history of Morocco.

Описание:
Moroccan garment design and consumption have experienced major shifts in recent history, transforming from a traditional craft-based enterprise to a thriving fashion industry. Influenced by western fashion, dress has become commoditized and has expanded from tailoring to designer labels. This book presents the first detailed ethnographic study of Moroccan fashion.
Drawing on interviews with three generations of designers and the lifestyle press, the author provides an in-depth analysis of the development of urban dress, which reveals how traditional dress has not been threatened but rather produced and consumed in different ways.
With chapters examining themes such as dress and politics, gender, faith, modernity, and exploring topics from craft to e-fashion, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of fashion, anthropology, material culture, sociology, cultural studies, gender studies and related fields.
