Описание: Imagining Religious Toleration is a contributed volume that examines how literary modes were used to influence cultural understandings of tolerance and coexistence over the course of two hundred years.
On April 6, 1948, a significant portion of the population of the village of Ecs ny in Somogy County, Hungary, was expelled from their homeland. This was the result of Protocol XIII of the Potsdam Declaration of 1945 calling for "the orderly and humane transfer of German populations now living in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary."
The families involved were descendants of German settlers who began to arrive in what would become the village of Ecs ny as early as 1754. They formed an Evangelical Lutheran congregation at the outset that would survive as an underground movement until the Edict of Toleration promulgated by the Emperor Joseph II of Austria in 1782.
These two governmental actions taken centuries apart, play pivotal roles in the lives and destinies of the families who would call Ecs ny their home. The families that were expelled were sent to the then Russian Zone of Germany from which large numbers later escaped into the American and British Zones. Numerous families were successful in emigrating from there to Canada, the United States, and Australia.
This publication is addressed to their English-speaking descendants, providing them with genealogical information about their forebears. In addition, the families associated with the various affiliated congregations in H cs, Pol ny, R ksi, Somodor, and V mos are included as well as information about the families that emigrated to Slavonia, the United States, and Canada prior to World War II.
There are also introductory articles to assist the reader in having a basic knowledge of the history, lifestyle, and origins of their families. This work is published on the 260th anniversary of the founding of Ecs ny.
Описание: The Lively Experiment chronicles how Americans have continually demolished traditional prejudices while at the same time erecting new walls between belief systems. Nearly four hundred years after Roger Williams` 1633 Rhode Island colony, the "lively experiment" of religious tolerance remains a core tenet of the American way of life.

A New Statesman Best Book of the Year A Church Times Book of the Year
We are facing a crisis of civility, a war of words polluting our public sphere. In liberal democracies committed to tolerating active, often heated disagreement, the loss of this virtue appears critical. Most modern appeals to civility follow arguments by Hobbes or Locke by proposing to suppress disagreement or exclude views we deem "uncivil" for the sake of social harmony. By comparison, mere civility--a grudging conformity to norms of respectful behavior--as defended by Rhode Island's founder, Roger Williams, might seem minimal and unappealing. Yet Teresa Bejan argues that Williams's outlook offers a promising path forward in confronting our own crisis, one that challenges our fundamental assumptions about what a tolerant--and civil--society should look like. "Penetrating and sophisticated." --James Ryerson, New York Times Book Review "Would that more of us might learn to look into the past with such gravity and humility. We might end up with a more (or mere) civil society, yet." --Los Angeles Review of Books "A deeply admirable book: original, persuasive, witty, and eloquent." --Jacob T. Levy, Review of Politics "A terrific book--learned, vigorous, and challenging." --Alison McQueen, Stanford University
Описание: The 1689 Toleration Act marked a profound shift in the English religious landscape. By permitting the public worship of Protestant Dissenters, the statute laid the foundations for legal religious pluralism, albeit limited, and ensured that eighteenth-century English society would be multi-denominational. However, the Act was rushed, incomplete and on many issues fundamentally ambiguous. It therefore threw up numerous practical difficulties for the clergy of the Church of England, who were deeply divided about what the legislation implied. This book explores how the Church reacted to the legal establishment of a multi-denominational religious environment and how it came to terms with religious pluralism. Thanks to the Toleration Act's inherent ambiguity, there was genuine confusion over how far it extended. The book examines how the practicalities of toleration and pluralism were worked out in the decades after 1689. A series of five case studies addresses: political participation; the movement for the reformation of manners; baptism; education; and the use of chapels. These studies illustrate how the Toleration Act influenced the lived experiences of the clergy and the effects that it had on their pastoral role. The book places the Act in its broader context, at the end of England's 'long Reformation', and emphasises how, far from representing a defining constitutional moment, the Act heralded a process of experimentation, debate and adjustment. RALPH STEVENS is a Tutor in History at University College Dublin.
