Описание:
Real Women Run is an innovative feminist ethnography that consists of a series of linked essays and presentations about women who run at the intersections of queer, feminist, and running identities. Faulkner uses feminist grounded theory, poetic inquiry, and qualitative content analysis to examine women's embodied stories of running: how they run, how running fits into the context of their lives and relationships, how they enact or challenge cultural scripts of women's activities and normative running bodies, and what running means for their lives and identities. During a two-and-a-half-year ethnography with women who run, Faulkner engaged in an intersectional qualitative content analysis of websites and blogs targeted to women runners, a grounded theory poetic analysis of 41 interviews with women who run, and participant observation at road races.
Real Women Run speaks to the call for a more physical feminism. This ethnography sees women's physical and mental strength developed through running as a way to embrace the contradictions between a deconstructed focus on the mind/body split and the focus on individuals' actual material bodies and their everyday interactions with their bodies and through their bodies with the world around them.

Описание: Genuine faith in Christ is not meant to be kept or practiced in isolation. Genuine faith in Christ is meant to be shared, passed down to multiple generations, and lived out in such a way as to ignite passion and pursuit of Jesus in others. We are each and all called to pass the baton along our faith journey.
Описание: Why would a pregnant woman consider but not obtain an abortion? In the contemporary United States, most would assume she wants to have a baby. Increasing policy regulation and cultural stigmatization of abortion, however, challenge this as a universal explanation. What if some women continue their pregnancies after considering abortion not because they want to have a baby but, instead, because they can't get an abortion?
In No Real Choice, Katrina Kimport uses in-depth interviews with pregnant women who considered but did not obtain an abortion to argue that not everyone who continues a pregnancy wants to have a baby. Some are doing so because abortion was not a real option. Illustrating how policies, the organization of abortion care, anti-abortion cultural narratives, and negative prior experiences of reproductive healthcare can make abortion unavailable for some women, Kimport challenges assumptions that all women have real pregnancy choice. Further, by centering the experiences of low-income Black women, she demonstrates that none of these factors operates in isolation: each leverages existing race and class inequality to construct insurmountable barriers to choosing abortion. When abortion is not a real option, reproductive autonomy is denied. The concern, Kimport argues, is not what outcome pregnant women choose, but whether they are able to make a real choice.
Focusing attention on the process of pregnancy decision making-and not just pregnancy outcomes-Kimport provides a nuanced, accessible, and theoretically-grounded framework for understanding how reproductive autonomy is denied, for whom, and at what cost.

Relationships built on trust matter.
Deep and meaningful interpersonal connections at work are critical to your career—and to your well-being. Bonds built on trust allow women to help one another, exchange information, and be more productive. But high-quality professional relationships are only possible with emotional openness—and not all women feel they can be vulnerable enough in the office to develop these kinds of ties.
Making Real Connections explores the many ways that our working relationships with other women are usually amazing—and sometimes messy.
This book will inspire you to:
Find more authentic ways to grow your network

Описание: From The Real Housewives of Atlanta to Flavor of Love, reality shows with predominantly black casts have often been criticized for their negative representation of African American women as loud, angry, and violent. Yet even as these programs appear to be rehashing old stereotypes of black women, the critiques of them are arguably problematic in their own way, as the notion of “respectability” has historically been used to police black women’s behaviors. The first book of scholarship devoted to the issue of how black women are depicted on reality television, Real Sister offers an even-handed consideration of the genre. The book’s ten contributors-black female scholars from a variety of disciplines-provide a wide range of perspectives, while considering everything from Basketball Wives to Say Yes to the Dress. As regular viewers of reality television, these scholars are able to note ways in which the genre presents positive images of black womanhood, even as they catalog a litany of stereotypes about race, class, and gender that it tends to reinforce. Rather than simply dismissing reality television as “trash,” this collection takes the genre seriously, as an important touchstone in ongoing cultural debates about what constitutes “trashiness” and “respectability.” Written in an accessible style that will appeal to reality TV fans both inside and outside of academia, Real Sister thus seeks to inspire a more nuanced, thoughtful conversation about the genre’s representations and their effects on the black community.
Overwhelmingly, Black teenage girls are negatively represented in national and global popular discourses, either as being “at risk” for teenage pregnancy, obesity, or sexually transmitted diseases, or as helpless victims of inner city poverty and violence. Such popular representations are pervasive and often portray Black adolescents’ consumer and leisure culture as corruptive, uncivilized, and pathological. In She’s Mad Real, Oneka LaBennett draws on over a decade of researching teenage West Indian girls in the Flatbush and Crown Heights sections of Brooklyn to argue that Black youth are in fact strategic consumers of popular culture and through this consumption they assert far more agency in defining race, ethnicity, and gender than academic and popular discourses tend to acknowledge. Importantly, LaBennett also studies West Indian girls’ consumer and leisure culture within public spaces in order to analyze how teens like China are marginalized and policed as they attempt to carve out places for themselves within New York’s contested terrains.
"In telling her own true story in Real Belonging, Lynn Price masterfully weaves in lessons to benefit all youth and families involved in foster care, and even those that are not. Lynn tells stories showing the twists, triumphs, setbacks, myths and facts of the journey through the system, and in doing so, proves that nothing in a child's life can compare to the sibling bond. Those in the social services including caseworkers, foster, adoptive and kindship providers will find great insights in this book. And most importantly, kids and foster families-every family-will find hope."
- LeAnn Thieman, Co-author of Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul
"It's no secret that our most sacred institutions have been rocked to the core and it has adversely affected our nation's youth. But in this book, Lynn Price demonstrates that we all still need to belong to something bigger than ourselves and she shows how we can make others feel as if they do belong and they really do matter. This is a must read for anyone who has kids, likes kids, or is a kid at heart."
- Eric Chester, award-winning speaker and bestselling author
"As a foster child, not only was Lynn able to reunite my sister and me with my brothers (who lived with our aunt) for an amazing week at camp each year, she also taught me there were no limitations no matter who you were. She made it OK to be a foster child and let foster children know they're not alone. Read this book so your life is changed as much as mine was."
- Amber, former Camper
"It is because of Lynn and her passion for the sibling bond that allows me to have a relationship with my brother. It is because of Camp that I had someone to walk me down the aisle when I got married. Someone to share pictures of my son with when he was born. Someone for my son to call uncle. Many people take their siblings for granted, but for my brother and me, we are the only stability that we have had through the rough patches in life and we wouldn't be able to say that, or share any experiences like we have, without Lynn taking her hardship and making it something to help others."
