Описание: A healing and balanced faith, Haitian Vodou is a member of the African Traditional Religions that came into the Western Hemisphere via the Transatlantic slave trade. Despite a much misunderstood image, Vodou gives its practitioners the tools to understand the world around them. By participating in an annual calendar of observances, rituals and services, servitors can engage with the Vodou "Mysteries", thereby enlisting their aid in helping lead a balanced life. Manbo Vye Zo uses her own story of becoming manbo or mother of the spirits as a stepping stone for her students and godchildren so they can learn by her example. An educational text as well as story, Manbo helps the reader gain a greater understanding of the faith as she leads us ever deeper into unexplored territory. Come experience the world of Haitian Vodou from an insider's perspective, and leave forever changed in your outlook on the world of Vodou.

In Queering Black Atlantic Religions Roberto Strongman examines Haitian Vodou, Cuban Lucumí/Santería, and Brazilian Candomblé to demonstrate how religious rituals of trance possession allow humans to understand themselves as embodiments of the divine. In these rituals, the commingling of humans and the divine produces gender identities that are independent of biological sex. As opposed to the Cartesian view of the spirit as locked within the body, the body in Afro-diasporic religions is an open receptacle. Showing how trance possession is a primary aspect of almost all Afro-diasporic cultural production, Strongman articulates transcorporeality as a black, trans-Atlantic understanding of the human psyche, soul, and gender as multiple, removable, and external to the body.

Описание: Haitian Vodou is a participatory faith that brings you the servitor into full frontal contact with the Spirits of Vodou. Descended from the Africans who were brought into the New World during the slave era, Haitian Vodou has survived and thrived on the island of Haiti. The Africans who survived the terrors of the Middle Passage crafted a remarkable faith for themselves and their families. Although they were from different nations and practiced different systems of belief, these survivors choose to find commonality with their fellow men. They designed a faith that gave respect to everyone, and included everyone. By doing so, their message to the future generations was simple. Honor those who have gone before you. And Respect those who walk with you in this life. These watch words are the foundational belief of Haitian Vodou, and are kept to this very day by every sosyete that teaches, practices and keeps the Vodou faith alive. Haitian Vodou achieves this remarkable longevity by keeping to its ancestral African theology of ancestor reverence, family oriented events and community driven rituals such as marriage, baptisms and kanzo (the ordination ritual of Vodou.) Each Vodou house is comprised of leaders called "mambo" and "papa", who are the parents of the congregation, with all the members being their 'children'. Sosyetes provide the basics to everyone - food, shelter, love and help. This generosity is further elucidated in service, when through the action of prayers and dance, the community can speak directly to the "angels" - the very spirits of the Vodou faith. This remarkable event is achieved through creation of what LaMenfo calls The Vibrational Crossroad of Vodou. Create this extraordinary location in your temple and you will experience the electric energy of which she speaks. Music, scent, sound and dance all combine to create a rarefied arena in which the Spirits can arrive and interact with you directly. With recipes for bathes, guidance on setting up your altar correctly, and step by step instruction on how to make actual contact with your Ancestors, LaMenfo has gifted the Vodou community with a pattern for success in ritual space. This book fills a void in magical training for Vodouisants. Follow this book to create your own authentic service and watch how the Lwa respond to your vibe. The Vibrational Crossroad is where you want to be standing, when you create ritual space
African-derived religious traditions like Santer a and Vodou have long been a site of political, cultural and social resistance in the Caribbean. Through his focus on the body as the juncture between the physical and spiritual planes, Humphrey's analysis of a number of Caribbean novels and plays foregrounds the complex nature of women's negotiation of religious, social and political life as participants in these marginalized religious communities. Examining works from authors such as Cuban playwright Eugenio Hern ndez Espinosa (1936-), Haitian novelists Kettly Mars (1958-) and Marie Chauvet (1916-1973), and Cuban-Puerto Rican writer Mayra Montero (1952-), he demonstrates the manner in which the worldviews offered by Santer a and Vodou permit the divisions within and between concepts such as gender, sexuality, womanhood, space and nation to be transcended. As a result, not only do these narratives resist and subvert hegemonic and patriarchal discourses, but also provide a means through which the voice of the marginalized can be heard.
