Описание: There are billions of internet users in China, and this number is continually growing. This book looks at the various purposes of this internet use, and provides a study about how the entertainment-consuming users form into publics through the mediation of technologies in the era of network society. It questions how individuals, mediated by new information and communication technologies, come together to form new social categories. The book goes on to investigate how public(s) is formed in the era of network society, with particular focus on how fans become publics in a society that follows the logic of network. Using online surveys and in-depth interviews, this book provides a rich description of the process of constructing a new social formation in contemporary China.

Описание:

This book is a translation and study of the Vajrasamadhi-Sutra and an examination of its broad implications for the development of East Asian Buddhism. The Vajrasamadhi-Sutra was traditionally assumed to have been translated from Sanskrit, but some modern scholars, principally in Japan, have proposed that it is instead an indigenous Chinese composition. In contrast to both of these views, Robert Buswell maintains it was written in Korea around A.D. 685 by a Korean adept affiliated with the East Mountain school of the nascent Chinese Ch'an tradition. He thus considers it to be the oldest work of Korean Ch'an (or Son, which in Japan became known as the Zen school), and the second-oldest work of the sinitic Ch'an tradition as a whole. Buswell makes his case for the scripture's dating, authorship, and provenance by placing the sutra in the context of Buddhist doctrinal writings and early Ch'an literature in China and Korea. This approach leads him to an extensive analysis of the origins of Ch'an ideology in both countries and of the principal trends in the sinicization of Buddhism. Buddhism has typically been studied in terms of independent national traditions, but Buswell maintains that the history of religion in China, Korea, and Japan should be treated as a whole.

Описание: In the 1950s and 1960s, the Chinese government exerted unprecedented efforts and marshaled enormous economic resources for the purpose of capital formation. It was difficult for the rest of the world to determine precisely how successful these efforts were because of the incompleteness of official investment statistics. In Capital Formation in Mainland China, Kang Chao provides a comprehensive measurement of fixed capital investment in China. His basic approach is that of the commodity flow method, which takes into account each investment component and each capital goods item installed in China since 1949. He has complied extensive information both from diverse Chinese publications and from sources in countries that have exported capital goods to China. On the basis of this empirical foundation he analyzes all facets of the investment drive as well as the relationship between capital accumulation and the major aspects of Chinese economic development, revealing many details previously unknown to the West.

In the process of arriving at his aggregate estimates, Chao has sorted, checked, and tabulated detailed data relating to individual components that will constitute an important aid to scholars involved in research on related subjects.
