Описание: This is not your grandparent's Haggadah. The Orange on the Plate: A Liberated Seder is a reinterpretation of the Haggadah, offering a service that is not too long, yet full of all the great stories of Passover. It provides an opportunity for everyone at the table to participate as much or as little as they wish. Woman-centered, the service can include men, too. It is very appropriate for secular, spiritual and non-traditional people. It is not a worship service, but a celebration of the story, told in a friendly and fresh way, complete with ritual and discussion. "A refreshing take on the traditional Passover Seder This is a sensitively written, thoughtful Seder minus the dogma. It gets to the essence of what the Seder is all about - a celebration of those who have longed for and achieved liberation throughout the history of humankind." - Andrea K. Ecke, Professor of World Religions, Misericordia University "A lucid, highly accessible, but also deeply feminist version of the Passover ritual. This progressive - even radical - reading of the holiday's history is wonderfully imaginative and critical at the same time. Heckman has given us all a hopeful, inclusive, and empowering vision of the Passover experience." - Janet Gyatso, Harvard Divinity School

Описание: A top economist weighs in on one of the most urgent questions of our times: What is the source of inequality and what is the remedy?
In Giving Kids a Fair Chance, Nobel Prize-winning economist James Heckman argues that the accident of birth is the greatest source of inequality in America today. Children born into disadvantage are, by the time they start kindergarten, already at risk of dropping out of school, teen pregnancy, crime, and a lifetime of low-wage work. This is bad for all those born into disadvantage and bad for American society.
Current social and education policies directed toward children focus on improving cognition, yet success in life requires more than smarts. Heckman calls for a refocus of social policy toward early childhood interventions designed to enhance both cognitive abilities and such non-cognitive skills as confidence and perseverance. This new focus on preschool intervention would emphasize improving the early environments of disadvantaged children and increasing the quality of parenting while respecting the primacy of the family and America's cultural diversity.
Heckman shows that acting early has much greater positive economic and social impact than later interventions--which range from reduced pupil-teacher ratios to adult literacy programs to expenditures on police--that draw the most attention in the public policy debate. At a time when state and local budgets for early interventions are being cut, Heckman issues an urgent call for action and offers some practical steps for how to design and pay for new programs.
The debate that follows delves deeply into some of the most fraught questions of our time: the sources of inequality, the role of schools in solving social problems, and how to invest public resources most effectively. Mike Rose, Geoffrey Canada, Charles Murray, Carol Dweck, Annette Lareau, and other prominent experts participate.

Описание: A once outcast in school unwittingly finds love for the first time. Looked at as a troublemaker, the young writer sits in class as the events of 9/11 unfold, and thus an unforgettable journey begins. Enlisting in the army, he finds himself in combat in the unforgiving mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. When an explosion leaves him temporarily blind, the phrase "Everything happens for a reason" resonates with him for the first time. The reader accompanies Sgt. Heckman as he journeys through war, recovery, loss, and love to see how even the worst situations can have a happy ending.
