Along the way he also rescues a damsel in distress and together they run off - over the hills and far away.

Описание:

Stories define us. They tell us who we are, or at least who we think we are. The American story of westward expansion draws upon heroic tales of courage and perseverance and the "pioneer spirit." But settlers and their descendants also spread false narratives about Indians in order to justify ruinous private and public acts. The stories we heard, the tales we still hear, even now give people cover to behave abominably. And this abominable behavior has economic effect. It means that bankers are less likely to make loans to Black and Native American men and women, and it means that fewer businesses are started, less wealth is accumulated, and poverty is more intransigent.

But narrative is not destiny. Slings & Arrows is a story about how a small company persevered and struck a blow against the poisonous narratives keeping Indian families in poverty while winning a billion and a half dollars for housing and economic development on reservation lands. Author David Bland witnessed the power of negative stories forty years ago while working to provide affordable housing and economic development in African American communities in Virginia. He heard tall tales about Indian Country as the Community Affairs Manager at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank, observing how bankers and investors wielded power over Indian people on reservations across the country. In Slings & Arrows, he writes:

"When you look at the impact that stories about Native Americans have on bankers and investors in Indian Country you begin to see that capital is less available to Indians not just because of Indian trust land, but the lack of trust in Indians."

From "welfare cheat" or "food stamp fraud" to absurd stories about an Indian cutting a hole in his house so his horse could drink from the bathtub, the labels and stories applied to poor communities gain currency in the majority world through their meanness, absurdity, and repetition. It is easy for people to traffic in these toxic stories, but the white majority does not reckon with the impact on minority communities.

Slings & Arrows tries to break the cycle and describes the author's 40-years of experience learning how communities beset by generations of trauma and dispossession fight back using their history and culture to create a better path. A new narrative must be told and Slings & Arrows is just one small step in re-writing the stories we tell.

Описание: Sandra Bland Mattered. Why did Sandra get jail time instead of a traffic fine? Sandra Bland should be alive today working at Prairie View A&M University, her beloved alma mater, voicing her support of the Black Lives Matter movement and opinions as "Sandy Speaks." Sandra Bland 2.0: Racist Policing in America brings readers face-to-face with the root of racist policing, a crisis in America. The unjust use of police force and trigger-happy killing of blacks are commonplace in a supposedly post-racial society. Police bias and racial disparities promulgated by subcultures and other unchecked vices run rampant. Implicit or explicit racism, they're the same. Both result in racial bias and too often, the death of blacks. The Internet is a memorial gateway to hundreds of African-American victims of police violence and shootings. Some blacks don't believe America will ever become post-racial. The alt-right will never disband, white supremacists are here to stay, and racist white police officers continue to terrorize the black community. Blacks aren't disillusioned. And wishful thinking doesn't make African Americans safe. But our voices will be heard. We demand equal protection of the law. Black Lives Matter. People didn't like it when Sandra Bland and thousands of protestors shouted "Black Lives Matter." Bland fell victim to the racism she fought to eliminate. Sandra Bland's traffic stop debacle and subsequent death inside her jail cell captured the world's attention. Sandra Bland 2.0: Racist Policing in America explores Sandra Bland's convictions about racism, what happened to Bland, and America's heartbreaking panorama of racist policing. How do we ensure justice for Sandra Bland and other victims, who died needlessly during or in the aftermath of a simple traffic stop? Sandra Bland 2.0: Racist Policing in America is a protest against the victimization of African Americans and commentary about racism.

Описание:

Having just had a beautiful holiday of 2018, missing Levi's second Christmas and finishing the eighth edition of Milla de Oro Magazine that went over well, AC went back to Colombia. Levi was the dog AC had paid for with his bitcoin earnings from letting his friend, Kelly use his Starcard. AC began to write his book getting wrapped up in the themes he was trying to express in his magazine with AI and the surveillance commercialism. He began to believe that people in Colombia were out to take his photos and his literature. At the end of writing this book he was surprised to find out that some people in Colombia had read his book and even though he had tried his best to keep the entire writing process top-secret, the book got out of his hands somehow.

Upon finishing the book and saying so many absurd things that at sometimes were indeed awful, AC thinking that would sell well, Jeimmy was determined to get him out of the house and on the road to sales. He left for the States with high hopes only to find himself an absolute unknown in all communities.

AC ran around, going ahead and publishing his ninth edition of his magazine to find it not read, losing his readership in Colombia and losing his grip with his wife. Thinking his stuff was still disappearing, like his memories. AC did not write a memoir in his Words Will Never hurt Me, but a train of thought. Many details about China and college at SMU were left out, even the beginning of the relationship with Jeimmy had been lost at the hands of Apple. AC's recovery was not going well.

AC did not want to have sex, knowing it would end his relationship with his wife who was already at a great distance and not talking to him through much of the year up until Thanksgiving when AC finally released his first book. This book is about that struggle and the turmoil of thinking his words are wasted into the abyss of spies as he writes them that was brought on through the writing of Words Will Never hurt Me and only later into 2020 alleviated in his efforts to be published with an agent, Matt Bialer. It's an account provided by Google Maps and then detailed by AC's own experience.

Описание: In Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, volume 5, Keith P. Bland offers a comprehensive account of the British members of the moth family TORTRICIDAE sensu lato. For ease of handling, it is divided into two Volumes: Part 1, the Tortricinae & Chlidanotinae, and Part 2, the Olethreutinae. Each volume is self-contained and indexed separately. For each species there is included a full taxonomy, a description of the adult moth, an account of the larval stages and its life history. The up-to-date British distribution for each species is given as maps showing vice-county occurrence, supported with further detail where relevant. Each species is illustrated by means of one or more coloured photographs of mounted specimens, proportionally sized. For all species, the male and female genitalia are depicted by Josef Razowski’s excellent line drawings. Besides an index to the moth species, there is a comprehensive index to larval food substrates. The original text was formed by the late E.F. (‘Ted’) Hancock and extended and updated by Keith P. Bland. Photographs of the adult moths were done by the latter and line drawings of the genitalia were all done by Josef Razowski.

Описание:

Dr. Myron Milford "Mike" Arons (1929-2008) is recognized internationally as one of the founders of humanistic psychology. This volume serves as both a tribute to his memory and a gateway to reflection and scholarship by future generations of humanistic psychologists who did not have the privilege to know Arons. Edited by his mentee, Dr. Andrew Bland, and daughter, Sandrine Arons, The New-Old traces Arons' thought as it evolved over about three decades, from the 1970s to the 2000s. Following Sandrine Arons' preface and Bland's overview of Mike Arons' life and scholarship, 13 of Arons' papers (some of which are rare, out-of-print, or unpublished) are presented thematically in four sections: (a) his inspiration and influences; (b) creativity, consciousness, and culture; (c) humanistic education; and (d) two of Arons' hermeneutic explorations (on the topics of intuition and the nature of self). The book concludes with a discussion about the contemporary implications and applications of Arons' thinking as well as the accuracy of his predictions about the future of both psychology and society. Finally, an annotated bibliography of Arons' complete writings is included as an appendix.

This beautiful picture book follows the journey of a young gray wolf who garnered nationwide attention when he became the first wild wolf in California in almost a century.

Using facts recorded by Fish & Wildlife scientists, author Emma Bland Smith imagines the wolf's experiences in close detail as he makes an epic 2,000-mile trek over three years time. The wolf's story is interwoven with the perspective of a young girl who follows his trek through the media. As she learns more about wolves and their relationships with humans, she becomes determined to find a way to keep him safe by making him a wolf that is too famous to harm.

A young girl follows the wolf's journey and, along the way, learns about issues around the re-introduction of wolves. It's an opportunity to engage young readers beyond the story.
