Описание: A validating new approach to the long-term grieving process that explains why we feel "stuck," why that's normal, and how shifting our perception of grief can help us grow--from the New York Times bestselling author of Motherless Daughters"This is perhaps one of the most important books about grief ever written. It finally dispels the myth that we are all supposed to get over the death of a loved one."--Claire Bidwell Smith, author of Anxiety: The Missing Stage of GriefAren't you over it yet? Anyone who has experienced a major loss in their past knows this question. We've spent years fielding versions of it, both explicit and implied, from family, colleagues, acquaintances, and friends. We recognize the subtle cues--the slight eyebrow lift, the soft, startled "Oh! That long ago?"--from those who wonder how an event so far in the past can still occupy so much precious mental and emotional real estate. Because of the common but false assumption that grief should be time-limited, too many of us believe we're grieving "wrong" when sadness suddenly resurges sometimes months or even years after a loss. The AfterGrief explains that the death of a loved one isn't something most of us get over, get past, put down, or move beyond. Grief is not an emotion to pass through on the way to "feeling better." Instead, grief is in constant motion; it is tidal, easily and often reactivated by memories and sensory events, and is re-triggered as we experience life transitions, anniversaries, and other losses. Whether we want it to or not, grief gets folded into our developing identities, where it informs our thoughts, hopes, expectations, behaviors, and fears, and we inevitably carry it forward into everything that follows. Drawing on her own encounters with the ripple effects of early loss, as well as on interviews with dozens of researchers, therapists, and regular people who've been bereaved, New York Times bestselling author Hope Edelman offers profound advice for reassessing loss and adjusting the stories we tell ourselves about its impact on our identities. With guidance for reframing a story of loss, finding equilibrium within it, and even experiencing renewed growth and purpose in its wake, she demonstrates that though grief is a lifelong process, it doesn't have to be a lifelong struggle.

Описание: The stirring history of global student activism during the second decade of the 21st century--up to and including the Black Lives Matter movement and the extraordinary events of 2020. Student resistance in the second decade of the 21st century has increased in both quantity and quality, supercharged by social media, to the point where it has become the single most powerful force for change in the world today, embodying the hopes of hundreds of millions of citizens to finally address climate change, the condition of women and other major issues. Student resistance movements are the vanguard that can jumpstart wider social movements that put governments on notice at a time when corruption and stagnation plague democracies and authoritarian regimes alike. In Student Resistance in the Age of Chaos, Book 2, Mark Boren details the increasing technological sophistication of student movements, as the stakes continue to rise and the movements grow ever larger. With 1.5 billion students in the world, student activists today use technology to turn local movements into national and international ones. Armed with sophisticated communications and cell phone cameras to record police violence, linked to websites for broadcasting and encrypted apps for privacy, today's student activists have already done much to stop genocide and ensure government reform or regime change in scores of countries. Student Resistance in the Age of Chaos, Book 2, is being published simultaneously with Student Resistance in the Age of Chaos, Book 1, 1999-2009: Globalization, Human Rights, Religion, War, and the Age of the Internet. Together, the two volumes present a complete and unprecedented history of today's student activism phenomenon. As Mark Boren writes, The explosion of protests in the world has shown us that there are millions of people--many of them young and altruistic--who are willing to stand up to forces of oppression, to risk their bodies, their freedom, and their lives to make the future better than the past, and that is humbling, inspiring, and hopeful for the future.

Описание: A reference book for making sense of life--from action (good except when it's not) to thinking (depressing) to youth (a treasure).
This book offers a guide to human nature and human experience--a reference book for making sense of life. In thirty-eight short, interconnected essays, Shimon Edelman considers the parameters of the human condition, addressing them in alphabetical order, from action (good except when it's not) to love (only makes sense to the lovers) to thinking (should not be so depressing) to youth (a treasure). In a style that is by turns personal and philosophical, at once informative and entertaining, Edelman offers a series of illuminating takes on the most important aspects of living in the world.
Edelman avoids reductive synthesis, staying clear of both exuberance and negativity. Drawing on an eclectic range of sources--quoting from a pre-Islamic Bedouin poem on one page, from Gogol on the next, citing both Borges and Marx--Edelman offers insights into the bright and dark sides of our nature. About anxiety, he observes, "All sentient beings are capable of physiological stress response, but it takes special skills to also do anxiety." Happiness is "a commodity that Americans pursue with almost as much verve as oil." Human language, on the other hand, is "an essential window into the sublime." All in all, human nature has much room for improvement. Working out ways to improve it, accompanied by this guide, is an exercise for the reader.

#1 New York Times Bestseller
This book is from the heart of a woman who practices each lesson she preaches. It struck a deep chord in me as a mother trying to raise a daughter in difficult times. -- Hillary Clinton
The Measure of Our Success is a book to turn lives around: a compassionate message for parents trying to raise moral children, a tough and searching book that ought to be required reading for every young American.
The book speaks powerfully to the author's three sons about the mothering Marian Wright Edelman gave them--mothering, she explains, that could not ignore other people's children who were in greater need. In the book's centerpiece, Twenty-Five Lessons for Life, we're invited to listen as a loving and extraordinarily committed mother gives her children lessons to live by.
The Measure of Our Success is an open letter to all America, and a timely message of hope and purpose for everyone.

Описание:
Ancient cities served as the actual, worldly landscape populated by "material" sites of memory. Some of these sites were personal and others were directly and intentionally involved in the shaping of a collective social memory, such as palaces, temples, inscriptions, walls, and gates. Many cities were also sites of social memory in a very different way. Like Babylon, Nineveh, or Jerusalem, they served as ciphers that activated and communicated various mnemonic worlds as they integrated multiple images, remembered events, and provided a variety of meanings in diverse ancient communities.
Memory and the City in Ancient Israel contributes to the study of social memory in ancient Israel in the late Persian and early Hellenistic periods by exploring "the city," both urban spaces and urban centers. It opens with a study that compares basic conceptualizing tendencies of cities in Mesopotamia with their counterparts in ancient Israel. Its essays then explore memories of gates, domestic spaces, threshing floors, palaces, city gardens and parks, natural and "domesticated" water in urban settings, cisterns, and wells. Finally, the studies turn to particular cities of memory in ancient Israel: Jerusalem, Samaria, Shechem, Mizpah, Tyre, Nineveh, and Babylon. The volume, which emerged from meetings of the European Association of Biblical Studies, includes the work of St phanie Anthonioz, Yairah Amit, Ehud Ben Zvi, K re Berge, Diana Edelman, Hadi Ghantous, Anne Katrine Gudme, Philippe Guillaume, Russell Hobson, Steven W. Holloway, Francis Landy, Daniel Pioske, Ulrike Sals, Carla Sulzbach, Karolien Vermeulen, and Carey Walsh.
