Описание: The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. It is both a Bildungsroman and a picaresque novel. It was first published on 28 February 1749 in London, and is among the earliest English prose works to be classified as a novel. It is the earliest novel mentioned by W. Somerset Maugham in his 1948 book Great Novelists and Their Novels among the ten best novels of the world. It became a best seller, with four editions being published in its first year alone.Tom Jones is generally regarded as Fieldings greatest book and as a very influential English novel. Plot of the novel: - A foundling of mysterious parentage brought up by Mr. Allworthy on his country estate, Tom Jones is deeply in love with the seemingly unattainable Sophia Western, the beautiful daughter of the neighboring squire-though he sometimes succumbs to the charms of the local girls. When Tom is banished to make his own fortune and Sophia follows him to London to escape an arranged marriage, the adventure begins. A vivid Hogarthian panorama of eighteenth-century life, spiced with danger and intrigue, bawdy exuberance and good-natured authorial interjections. Tom Jones is one of the greatest and most ambitious comic novels in English literature.

Описание: When Lady Booby s ever virtuous servant Joseph rejects her determined advances, she dismisses him. He then embarks on a search for his beloved, the pristine Fanny Goodwill. He is accompanied by his friend and guide, the hapless Parson Adams, and after Joseph reunites with Fanny, the three embark on a series of adventures. But they soon find that their dearly held scruples come into conflict with the various people thieves, lovers, judges, self-professed Christians they meet on the way. Written in avowed imitation of the great picaresque novel Don Quixote, Joseph Andrews uses clever characterization to pit the wholesomeness of life in the country against the hypocrisy of the city. Quick-witted and thoroughly entertaining, this novel both volumes of which are included in this edition is regarded as one of the earliest masterpieces of the genre.
