Описание: A chronicle of perseverance and hope in the face of economic crises and political changeCharleston and the Great Depression tells many stories of the city during the 1930s—an era of tremendous want, hope, and change—through a collection of forty annotated primary documents, including letters, personal accounts, organizational reports, meeting minutes, speeches, photographs, oral history excerpts, and trial transcripts. Together these documents reveal the various ways in which ordinary lowcountry residents—largely excluded from formal politics—responded to the era’s economic and social crises and made for themselves their own “New Deal.”Arranged in chronological order, the documents include Mayor Burnet R. Maybank’s 1931 inaugural address, in which the thirty-two-year-old merchantturned- politician warned grimly of worsening hardship; the trial testimony of Benjamin Rivers, an African American worker executed by the state after being convicted of murdering a Charleston police officer; horror writer H. P. Lovecraft’s detailed walking tour of the city, in which the visiting New Englander painted a fascinating but romanticized portrait of Charleston that somehow managed to overlook the adversities facing the local population; and Susan Hamilton’s powerful and contradictory memories of her enslavement, gathered as part of the Federal Writers Project. While the Great Depression was an era of economic crises and political change it was also a period of great hope and possibility as Americans from across the political spectrum persevered through hard times, driven by the conviction that government power could and should be used to alleviate suffering and create opportunities to better people’s lives. These documents capture the voices of diverse Charleston residents—from farmers and dockworkers to students, ministers, public officials, and social workers—as they struggled and strove for a better city and a better country.

Описание: What is it about an engine roaring into life that makes grown men go weak at the knees?--find out in this light-hearted look at one man's overwhelming obsession with machines
This is a book about machines and the men who love them. Some of these men are quite odd. Having always been a mechanophobe himself, living in the slow lane, Dan Kieran is on a mission to discover the allure of machines and man's need for speed. Follow Dan as he climbs aboard a penny-farthing for a jaunt around west London, drives a steam train through the "alps," joins the pit lane crew of Mitsubishi for the Britcar 24-hour race at Silverstone, discovers the link between Lawrence of Arabia and the "wall of death," meets tank collectors and the men behind "digger ballet," learns to fly in the shadow of Douglas Bader, and, along the way, wrestles with Aristotle, Jeremy Clarkson, Plato, Hunter S. Thompson, and, mostly, himself.

Описание:

This book analyses three of the most prevalent illnesses of late modernity: anxiety, depression and Alzheimer's disease, in terms of their relation to cultural pathologies of the social body. Usually these conditions are interpreted clinically in terms of individualized symptoms and responded to discretely, as though for the most part unrelated to each other. However, these diseases also have a social and cultural profile that transcends their particular symptomologies and etiologies. Anxiety, depression and Alzheimer's are diseases related to disorders of the collective esprit de corps of contemporary society.

Multidisciplinary in approach, the book addresses questions of how these conditions are manifest at both the individual and collective levels in relation to hegemonic biomedical and psychologistic understandings. Rejecting such reductive diagnoses, the authors argue that anxiety, depression and Alzheimer's disease, as well as other contemporary epidemics, are to be analysed in the light of individual and collective experiences of profound and radical changes in our civilization. A diagnosis of our times, Late Modern Subjectivity and its Discontents will appeal to a broad range of scholars with interests in health and illness, the sociology of medicine and contemporary life.
