Описание: This scholarly account traces the emergence of the Zulu Kingdom in South Africa in the early nineteenth century, under the rule of the ambitious and iconic King Shaka. Organized chronologically and thematically, this study draws attention to the political, military, and social changes that emerged, from Shaka`s youth through his eleven years of rule.
The principal work in this book was originally published under the title The Story of the Zulus, which might lead the reader to believe it was a work of ethnology. In fact, although the history of the birth and the development of the Zulus and the structure of Zulu society is touched upon briefly the majority of the work concerns the struggles in power, politics and war in eastern Southern Africa during the nineteenth century, concentrating particularly on the arrival of the British in the region and its dealings and collisions with the Zulu nation. Tensions were inevitably always high and bloodshed between the Zulus and Dutch and British settlers became increasingly frequent. The Anglo-Zulu War which inevitably broke out was initially disastrous for British forces. The entire conflict is explained in detail, as is its aftermath, as the fugitive Zulu king was hunted down and eventually captured. A power vacuum among the Zulus then resulted in more bloodshed until peace was eventually established in the region towards the turn of the twentieth century. Also included are two rare first-hand accounts by Zulu warriors who were present at the Battle of Isandlwana. Contains many illustrations, photographs and maps not present in the original edition.

Описание: Written by James Stuart (1868-1942), an expert on Zulu customs and history, this 1913 work focuses on the 1906 revolt in Natal against British rule. The book also covers the administration of the Zulu territories and goes on to investigate what became of the Zulu rebellion after its defeat.
Описание: Fighting and policing on the veldt and in the bush In parts of the globe during the nineteenth century, particularly those quarters incrementally being coloured red by the growth of the British Empire, many new police forces were formed and their services were as varied as their locations and the native peoples who populated them dictated. Sometimes that meant the activities of the force were virtually military for long periods of time and they were always certainly far removed from the duties of a 'Bobby' of the home country in every way. Never was this more true than for the subject of this book, 'The Mounted Police of Natal.' Formed in 1874 in South Africa it came into being at a time of violence and unrest with which it was involved until the eve of the Great War. Wars and uprisings among the Kaffir tribes of the Cape were raging long before the creation of the NMP, but, naturally, they immediately became embroiled. Everyone who knows of the period is aware of how in 1879 war against the Zulu nation broke out and shook the security of the colony to the core. Brave men of the NMP fought against and died under the assegais of the Zulu impis at Isandlwhana and in many other bloody engagements related in these pages. This riveting account goes on to describe the part played by the force in two Boer Wars, various tribal uprisings, the Zulu Rebellion of 1906 as well as the activities of lone policemen whose 'beat' covered hundreds of square miles and who had to deal with smugglers, witchcraft and murders in remote corners of the empire. This is a highly readable and comprehensive work and is recommended. Available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket for collectors.
Описание: A Quaker Goes to Spain is a multifaceted historical narrative. It recounts in detail a unique but virtually forgotten U.S. diplomatic initiative during The War of 1812, interwoven with a far more personal account of the emotional hardship, and the cultural and philosophical growth, experienced by the unusual man sent to carry out the mission.

Описание:
"Why are you learning Zulu?" When Mark Sanders began studying the language, he was often asked this question. In Learning Zulu, Sanders places his own endeavors within a wider context to uncover how, in the past 150 years of South African history, Zulu became a battleground for issues of property, possession, and deprivation. Sanders combines elements of analysis and memoir to explore a complex cultural history.
Perceiving that colonial learners of Zulu saw themselves as repairing harm done to Africans by Europeans, Sanders reveals deeper motives at work in the development of Zulu-language learning-from the emergence of the pidgin Fanagalo among missionaries and traders in the nineteenth century to widespread efforts, in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, to teach a correct form of Zulu. Sanders looks at the white appropriation of Zulu language, music, and dance in South African culture, and at the association of Zulu with a martial masculinity. In exploring how Zulu has come to represent what is most properly and powerfully African, Sanders examines differences in English- and Zulu-language press coverage of an important trial, as well as the role of linguistic purism in xenophobic violence in South Africa.
Through one person's efforts to learn the Zulu language, Learning Zulu explores how a language's history and politics influence all individuals in a multilingual society.

Miss Tully's Letters form a clear and eminently readable narrative of her years in Tripoli and the political situation there in the late 18th c, as well as a unique account of relationships within the harem of the ruler. She and her nieces had free access to the women of the family of the Bashaw (Pasha) and an intimate relationship developed. The Preface to the first edition of 1816, tells us that Miss Tully's nieces had spoken Arabic all their lives, and she herself clearly learned some, but it would still be fascinating to know whether this was the only common language of the harem or whether they also made use of the lingua franca in use at the time. The ruler's wife was a Georgian, his favourite was a local, presumably Arabic-speaking, Jewish woman, his daughters were married to renegade south Italians and the other inmates of the harem were of European, Circassian and possibly Berber origin, together with numerous Africans from various points south of the Sahara. Not much is known of the Tully family and a summary of the little available background is given below. The following notes attempt to provide a historical context for some of the main issues mentioned by Miss Tully: nomad raids, piracy, slaving and famine had been problems on and off for a couple of thousand years. Miss Tully sets down the story of the bitter quarrels among the young Karamanli brothers and their conclusion has been added for the sake of completeness and because of its broader historical interest. The period between the writing of the letters and their publication saw major changes in Europe, among them the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the abolition of slavery; optimism and the hope of political advance was in the air. The words of the 1816 Preface, explaining why Miss Tully's view of Tripoli is of particular interest, seem to echo a very modern preoccupation: "...the expectation of seeing there a nearer approximation to the enlightened principles of other nations, with regard to the personal rights and liberties of mankind....."
There are several comprehensive histories of the Zulu War written during the time it was being fought or completed shortly after the cessation of hostilities. Whilst this book is one of them, several considerations make it exceptional. One of the authors was a serving cavalry officer in the campaign and so in addition to his reports of incidents based on his own personal experience much of his information came from reliable and candid conversations and interviews with fellow officers whilst the campaign was underway. This has resulted in the inclusion in this book of much detail concerning equipment, logistics, fortification measures etc. which has been overlooked by other reporters as potentially uninteresting to civilian readers. These matters were, of course, of every day importance to those who were dealing with them and this valuable information has been included here for military history students and posterity. Reports of actions are also finely drawn as a consequence of a thorough understanding of conditions in the field from a soldier's perspective. The account of the disaster on Hlobane mountain is particularly interesting and well formed. Wyatt Edgell, the 'on the spot' reporter was sending information back to England for the penmanship of Waller Ashe to craft into this book. Wyatt Edgell was an officer in the 17th Lancers and was, in fact, tragically killed at Ulundi. So this Leonaur edition also includes a brief history of the 17th Lancers during the Zulu War and additionally benefits from the inclusion of illustrations and battlefield maps which were not included with any of the original texts.
