Описание: The essays in this volume analyze three aspects of the history of the Left and Marxism in Latin America: first, the need to discuss the "changing times" in the 21 century and its many and varied ingredients as part of a complex history of intellectual practices and policy proposals that have played for more than a century, the aspirations of broad social changes in Latin American sectors. Second, the acclimatization of Marxism in Latin America as part of a series of discussions with other intellectual movements and at the same time, within a process of intellectual production conditioned by political and institutional factors. And third, the construction of certain views on the historical past as a linchpin of the various policy proposals of the left in Latin America. Together, the texts included in this book contribute to enrich the debates around the relationship between history and politics but also, somehow, to imagine scenarios of growing democracy, justice, and equality in the region.

Описание:
This work is the second in a series of studies illuminating important, yet overlooked and forgotten Latino Civil Rights activists. Each study is unique and a standalone presentation of an individual and the times in which that individual lived. Each study is neither a biography nor monograph, but an introduction to that activist and the situations in which the individual was required to function.
The reader may well be advised to view each work as an introduction to the life and times of the individual. Additionally, no person is an isolated life. Each of us is part of an interlocking association of friends, acquaintances, and unfortunately enemies as well. Thus, many other players interact with each of our main characters to some extent, great or small, and for good or evil. Some of these other players will tend to appear in their various roles in more than one of the works in this series, and more than one may become the main character in one of these works.
This work has such juxtaposition with the first book in our proposed series. The first book focuses on the life of Bert Corona, a blacklisted Hispanic civil rights activist. In that book, a work focused primarily upon Bert Corona, another character appears in a discussion of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder Case. This financial wizard was Josefina Fierro, the main character in this study. Thus, various characters, both protagonists and antagonists, appear in these various roles, large and small, much as a series of books might have interlocking characters fulfilling major or minor roles as the series develops. However, these characters have the added worth of being real human beings living their lives in a period that brought about our own world of the present.
Thus, this series of studies has as a main goal, to address these individuals and their activities with the available source material. If there is no other value to them, may the value of "Let every voice be heard" constitute the motivation for their existence. However, I believe that the overwhelming percentage of readers will find the material fascinating and informative. Additionally, I believe that the history presented is sound and served to expand the knowledge base of the lives and times examined. As always, I wish each one of you a smashing good read and intellectual illumination.

Описание: The Latina/o culture and identity have long been shaped by their challenges to the religious, socio-economic, and political status quo. Robert Chao Romero explores the "Brown Church" and how this movement appeals to the vision for redemption that includes not only heavenly promises but also the transformation of our lives and the world.

Описание:
The first book-length study of Latina/o experiences in World War II over a wide spectrum of identities and ancestries—from Cuban American, Spanish American, and Mexican American segments to the under-studied Afro-Latino experience—Latina/os and World War II probes the controversial aspects of Latina/o soldiering and citizenship in the war, the repercussions of which defined the West during the twentieth century. The editors also offer a revised, more accurate tabulation of the number of Latina/os who served in the war.
Spanning imaginative productions, such as vaudeville and the masculinity of the soldado razo theatrical performances; military segregation and the postwar lives of veterans; Tejanas on the homefront; journalism and youth activism; and other underreported aspects of the wartime experience, the essays collected in this volume showcase rarely seen recollections. Whether living in Florida in a transformed community or deployed far from home (including Mexican Americans who were forced to endure the Bataan Death March), the men and women depicted in this collection yield a multidisciplinary, metacritical inquiry. The result is a study that challenges celebratory accounts and deepens the level of scholarly inquiry into the realm of ideological mobility for a unique cultural crossroads. Taking this complex history beyond the realm of war narratives, Latina/os and World War II situates these chapters within the broader themes of identity and social change that continue to reverberate in postcolonial lives.

Описание: This book broadens the scope of Latina/o criticism to include both widely-read and understudied nineteenth through twenty-first century fictional works that engage in critical discussions of gender, race, sexuality, and identity. The essays in this collection do not simply seek inclusion for the texts they critically discuss, but suggest that we more thoughtfully consider the utility of mapping, whether we are mapping land, borders, time, migration, or connections and disconnections across time and space. Using new and rigorous methodological approaches to reading Latina/o literature, contributors reveal a varied and textured landscape, challenging us to reconsider the process and influence of literary production across borders.
