The man who would become Ireland's beloved patron saint confronts his destiny during the tumultuous Dark Ages in this vibrant, enthralling novel
In 410 CE, arrogant sixteen-year-old Magonus Sucatus Patricius denounces Christianity as a religion for cowards when the Roman legions withdraw, leaving Britain vulnerable to raiders from the west. Determined to wield a sword despite being the grandson of a priest, the affluent young man is taken captive by barbarians and sold into slavery to a cruel Irish king. On a mountaintop in Eire, a shepherd strips him of his grand Roman name and calls him Padraic, marking him a man of no consequence.
Set against the magnificent backdrop of ancient Ireland and based on available historical facts, Saint Patrick's Confession, and Celtic myth, this gripping novel follows Patrick as he finds his faith while fighting to escape bondage in Eire. Friendship with a king, love for a queen, and enmity with the druids who fear his God will embroil him in a civil war in a land from which he will struggle to flee--only to be called to return.
"Fans of Mary Stewart's historical fiction should welcome this] fictionalized account of St. Patrick. . . . Hamilton has recreated this legendary character in a manner that permits the reader to understand Patrick as an ordinary man driven by a power that he can only reluctantly acknowledge and submit to. . . . An excellent portrayal of a time when magic was a normal occurrence and violence and upheaval were everywhere . . . Entertaining." --The Columbus Dispatch
"A blend of legend, allegory and facts that form the story of a spirited Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland . . . The Celtic ambiance of 5th century Eire is well caught . . . and a colorful tapestry emerges for a saint about whom little is known historically." --Publishers Weekly
"A spare outline of plot gives no concept of the richness of the textural fabric of this book. Along with the historical figures, Hamilton] has interwoven the stories of such fictional characters as Licinius, the Briton warlord, the beautiful maiden Clodia, and the whore Morrighan. . . . If sheer love of subject were a guarantee of an author's success, then Hamilton is a winner on that ground alone. . . . As a departure from the usual historical novel, The Lion and The Cross is unique." --Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"An exciting adventure story about a rebellious, very human young man destined to become the revered Patron Saint of the Irish, this book is on the order of Mary Stewart's Merlin novels The Crystal Cave and The Hollow Hills." --Doubleday Catholic Book News

One of Christianity's most celebrated mystics, St. John of the Cross, was a 16th century Spanish Carmelite monk whose inspired poetry and writings are timeless guides those who seek union with God.
The Dark Night of the Soul is the most notable of St. John's works. It consists of an eight-stanza poem, followed by his commentary on it. He describes the journey of a committed soul towards ultimate union with God, citing the spiritual trials of Old Testament mystics and the wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas. The first step, described in Book I, is to detach the soul from the senses and from the consolatory experiences of active meditation which many are loathe to progress from. This detachment from the lower faculties is a prerequisite for the next stage of passive contemplation - described in Book II - when God works on the soul. It is an arduous phase achieved by few, requiring great faith and fortitude but the end result is an ecstatic experience of Divine Love and a sublime peace that is impossible to describe in words. St. John guides us through each step with loving encouragement until the soul's metamorphosis is complete - the human will and the holy Will of God are now in total alignment.
David Lewis' 1908 translation is a first-rate rendering of The Dark Night of the Soul and, with Benedict Zimmermann's inspired introduction and footnotes, offers a valuable contribution to any student of Christian mysticism.
tumultuous events surrounding the First Crusade and the ensuing centuries of struggle for the conquest of the Holy Land has reverberated throughout the centuries and affected our collective psyche to this date. 'The Sword and the Green Cross' offers a minutely researched analysis of the creation of one of the monastic and military Orders of the period: the Knights of Saint Lazarus.
Devoid of the chequered popularity of their contemporary Knights Templar or the Knights of Saint John, the Knights of Saint Lazarus, with their green cross and invariable care of lepers and other afflicted pilgrims, nobles, knights and peasantry, offer the reader a fascinating history of diplomacy, military exploits, survival instinct and a legacy which has permeated throughout time. The book explores the Order's birth in the Outremer, its expansion and Papal sponsorship, its constant interaction with the Templars and the Hospitallers and its tremendous growth in Europe which later justified its lengthy operations on the Continent even though the Holy Land was lost to the Crusades.
The book analyses its complete change from a Papal Order to a Monarchical Order under the benign overseeing of the French Kings and dwells at length on the immediate and long term ramifications of the French Revolution and the Order's demise.
The 'Sword and the Green Cross' colourfully projects the period in which the Order flourished and illustrates prominent Lazarites from throughout the centuries. It also minutely dissects the modern day revivals of Lazarite organisations worldwide and, by means of hitherto unpublished documentation, sifts through the interpolated myths of such a revival and its magnetic allure to thousands worldwide.
With a forward by best-selling author Tim Wallace Murphy, 'The Sword and the Green Cross' is a must read for all history buffs and those into Muslim-Christian relations and chivalry.
