Описание:

Punjab, a region divided between India and Pakistan, has witnessed multiple nomadic, mendicant, trading and pastoral mobilities for centuries. Imperial assisted mobilities in the 19th century produced a category of hypermobile Sikhs, who left their villages in Punjab to seek their fortunes in South East Asia, Africa, Australia, America and Canada. The practices of the British, British Indian and the Canada government to obstruct free flows of Sikhs offer telling instances of the exercise of governmentality through which both old imperialism and the new Empire assert their sovereignty.

This book focuses on the Komagata Maru episode of 1914: This Japanese ship was chartered by Gurdit Singh, a prosperous Sikh businessman from Malaya. It carried 376 passengers from Punjab and was not permitted to land in Vancouver on grounds of a stipulation about a continuous journey from the port of departure. It was forced to return to Kolkata where the passengers were fired at, imprisoned or kept under surveillance. The author isolates juridical procedures, tactics and apparatus of security through which the British Empire exercised power on imperial subjects to investigate the significance of this incident to colonial and postcolonial migration. Juxtaposing public archives including newspapers, official documents and reports with private archives and interviews of descendants, the book analyses the legalities and machineries of surveillance that regulate the movements of people in the old and new Empire.

Addressing contemporary discourse on neo-imperialism and resistance, nation, migration, diaspora, multiculturalism and citizenship, this book will be of interest to scholars in the field of diaspora studies, post colonialism, minority studies, migration and mobility studies, multiculturalism and Sikh /Punjab and South Asian studies.

Описание:

Chronicles how American culture - deeply rooted in white supremacy, slavery and capitalism - finds its origin story in the 17th century European colonization of Africa and North America, exposing the structural origins of American "looting"

Virtually no part of the modern United States--the economy, education, constitutional law, religious institutions, sports, literature, economics, even protest movements--can be understood without first understanding the slavery and dispossession that laid its foundation. To that end, historian Gerald Horne digs deeply into Europe's colonization of Africa and the New World, when, from Columbus's arrival until the Civil War, some 13 million Africans and some 5 million Native Americans were forced to build and cultivate a society extolling "liberty and justice for all." The seventeenth century was, according to Horne, an era when the roots of slavery, white supremacy, and capitalism became inextricably tangled into a complex history involving war and revolts in Europe, England's conquest of the Scots and Irish, the development of formidable new weaponry able to ensure Europe's colonial dominance, the rebel merchants of North America who created "these United States," and the hordes of Europeans whose newfound opportunities in this "free" land amounted to "combat pay" for their efforts as "white" settlers.

Centering his book on the Eastern Seaboard of North America, the Caribbean, Africa, and what is now Great Britain, Horne provides a deeply researched, harrowing account of the apocalyptic loss and misery that likely has no parallel in human history. The Apocalypse of Settler Colonialism is an essential book that will not allow history to be told by the victors. It is especially needed now, in the age of Trump. For it has never been more vital, Horne writes, "to shed light on the contemporary moment wherein it appears that these malevolent forces have received a new lease on life."

Описание:

Gerald G. May, M.D., one of the great spiritual teachers and writers of our time, argues that much to our detriment, the dark "shadow" side of true spiritual life has been trivialized and neglected. Superficial and naively upbeat spirituality does not heal and enrich the soul; nor does the tendency to relegate deep spiritual growth to mystics and saints. Only the honest, sometimes difficult encounters with what St. John of the Cross describes as "the dark night of the soul" can lead to true spiritual wholeness.

Drawing on the resources of great Christian writings as well as other spiritual traditions, psychiatric theory, and literature, May emphasizes that the "dark night" is not necessarily a time of suffering and despair, but rather an opportunity for transition and transformation. The Dark Night of the Soul embraces the universal spiritual experience of doubt, fear, emptiness, and despair, all of which are ingredients in developing a mature, authentic spiritual life. The dark gives depth, dimension, and fullness to enlightenment.

Gerald May, M.D., (1940-2005) was a psychiatrist and spiritual counselor and Senior Fellow in Contemplative Theology and Psychology at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Bethesda, MD. He wrote many books and articles blending spirituality and psychology, including Addiction and Grace and The Awakened Heart.

" May] becomes a messenger of hope, reminding readers that every dark night brings the sweet dawn of awakening."
