Описание: Haindl draws upon his knowledge of ancient cultures and his experiences with Native American life to create a unique deck that is a colorful and penetrating study of nature and spirituality. The Haindl Tarot deck relates the spiritual traditions of many cultures to human experiences and to the sacred wonder of our Earth. The captivating artwork of Haindl Tarot is non-traditional, yet the deck does follow the structure and meanings of the Rider-Waite deck for the most part, with some references to the Thoth Tarot. Each Major Arcana card shows kabbalistic, runic, and astrological associations. In the Minor Arcana each court card is represented by a god or goddess. The four suits are Wands -- Hindu; Cups -- Celtic and Norse; Swords -- Ancient Egyptian; and Stones -- Native American. The Haindl Tarot draws people in by the rare quality of its art. A painter who devoted his life to his work, Hermann Haindl brought to his pictures a skill and sophistication rare in modern Tarot decks. Drawn in by the unusual beauty of the cards, people who became familiar with the cards and learned how to use them discovered something more profound: a way of living dedicated to the sacred wonder of the Earth. The Haindl Tarot draws on the spiritual traditions of many cultures. By itself, this in not unique, as quite a few contemporary decks feature art from different cultures and mythologies. The Haindl Tarot, however, connects these traditions to real experience. These seventy-eight paintings reflect Haindl's devotion to nature, his recognition of the feminine, his travels, his encounters with holy teachers and spirits, his respect for all peoples, his political belief in responsibility for the past and future, and the crises that have shaped his understanding. Drawn to the cards by their unique art, many thousands of people have found their lives changed, sometimes quite dramatically. -- From the Introduction to Haindl Tarot; A Reader's Handbook by Rachel Pollack

Описание: Drawing on the context in which the symbolic protection of the white female body is symbolically linked with guarding the US southern body politic, Harriet Pollack traces a pattern in Eudora Welty`s fiction in which a sheltered middle-class daughter is disturbed or delighted by an other-class woman who takes pleasure in "making a spectacle" of her corporeal self.

Описание: Based on original research, this monograph is the first to portray the fascinating life of Bernhard Pollack (1865-1928), a pioneer neurohistologist, ophthalmologist, and world-class pianist. In doing so, it revives important scientists and musicians of fin-du-si cle Berlin. Pollack wrote the first standard reference on the staining methods for the nervous system (1897). Born into a Prussian-Jewish family, he received his piano education from Moritz Moszkowski and his pathology education from Carl Weigert. Pollack worked at the Institutes of W. Waldeyer (anatomy), E. Mendel (neuropsychiatry), Nobel laureate R. Koch (infectious diseases), and the Eye Clinic of P. Silex, before becoming Professor of Ophthalmology at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universit t in 1919. English translations of two articles by Pollack, on musical memory and on Moszkowski, are included. The book also chronicles the founding by Pollack of the Berliner rzte-Orchester, who in 2011 celebrate their centennial.

Описание: Faced with Eudora Welty’s preference for the oblique in literary performances, some have assumed that Welty was not concerned with issues of race, or even that she was perhaps ambivalent toward racism. This collection counters those assumptions as it examines Welty’s handling of race, the color line, and Jim Crow segregation and sheds new light on her views about the patterns, insensitivities, blindness, and atrocities of whiteness.Contributors to this volume show that Welty addressed whiteness and race in her earliest stories, her photography, and her first novel, Delta Wedding. In subsequent work, including The Golden Apples, The Optimist’s Daughter, and her memoir, One Writer’s Beginnings, she made the color line and white privilege visible, revealing the gaping distances between lives lived in shared space but separated by social hierarchy and segregation. Even when black characters hover in the margins of her fiction, they point readers toward complex lives, and the black body is itself full of meaning in her work. Several essays suggest that Welty represented race, like gender and power, as a performance scripted by whiteness. Her black characters in particular recognize whiteface and blackface as performances, especially comical when white characters are unaware of their role play.Eudora Welty, Whiteness, and Race also makes clear that Welty recognized white material advantage and black economic deprivation as part of a cycle of race and poverty in America and that she connected this history to lives on either side of the color line, to relationships across it, and to an uneasy hierarchy of white classes within the presumed monolith of whiteness.Contributors: Mae Miller Claxton, Susan V. Описание:
From the beginning of its recorded history until the opening to the West in the last century, Japan was caught between a love for and a rejection of Chinese civilization. David Pollack argues that the dialectical relationship between the two countries figured more importantly in the Japanese sense of identity and signification than any particular borrowed Chinese cultural materials.
