Описание: Vito Acconci is among the key late 20th-century artists who expanded the boundaries of art beyond painting and sculpture, bringing art out of the gallery or museum into shared public spaces. Initally a poet, Acconci beca involved with the New York conceptual art scene in the late 1960s. His writing began to take the form of instructions or descriptions for activities which the artist would then perform. He would, for example, wander down a street, choose people at random and follow them ("Following Piece" 1969); or perform basic activities repetitively, such as attempting to catch a ball while blindfolded ("Adaption Study - Blindfolded Catching", 1970). These activities were at first documented by texts and photographs but as soon as video became available Acconci pioneered its use in the art medium. In 1972 he produced the most famous performance installation, "Seedbed". In Manhattan's Sonnabend Gallergy, Acconci built a low ramp, subtly raising the wooded floor. Concealed underneath it, Acconci stimulated himself with sexual fantasies about viewers walking in the empty gallery above, speaking his fantasies into a microphone linked to loud speakers. Spectators unexpectedly found themselves implicated in an intimate power relationship between the artist and the viewer. From 1974 Acconci no longer placed his own body at the centre of his work. He continued investigating social themes with installations in which viewers could create private spaces in the midst of public areas. Since the mid 1980s his work has turned towards experimental architectural projects. In 1988 he set up the architectural practice Acconci Studio. Some of Acconci Studio's projects include "Flying Doors by Ticket Pavilion", "Terminal B/C", "Philadelphia Airport (1998) and "Screens for a Walkway, Shibuya Station, Tokyo" (2000). Like Dan Graham, Acconci is a key artist of the 1960s generation, equally of interest to the art and architecture worlds. He participated in the landmark exhibitions "Information" at The Museum of Modern Art, New York (1970), Documenta in 1972 and 1982 and the 1976 Venice Biennale. His retrospectives include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1981) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1983). Acconci Studio has public commissions around the world and was featured at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2001.

Описание: Antoni Gaudi is now recognized as one of the masters of modern architecture, with his organic, vinelike forms, sensuous wooden interiors, and brilliantly coloured mosaics expressing a synthesis of international modernism and local Catalan artistic traditions. A builder by instinct and practice, Gaudi's artistic sensibilities were among the most imaginative and baroque of any modern architect. His work is instantly recognizable, in particular his last, uncompleted work, the strange and massive cathedral of the Sagrada Familia, with its sandcastle-like dripping towers. His iconic Casa Batllo (1907), an apartment building resembling a pile of gracefully draped stones hugging a corner of the Paseo de Gracia, has become a symbol of Barcelona. His Guell Park (1915), built originally for an important patron and Catalan industrialist for whom the architect built several other works, has recently been restored and is open to the public. Despite his current renown, critical recognition of his talent and significance came late, as the architecture establishment had difficulty fitting him into the canon of the Modern Movement. Gaudi's was a truly unique oeuvre, and this account of his work examines his work in the context of his life and times. He came of age during a time of rising Catalan nationalism and the flowering of a uniquely Catalan culture that mixed art nouveau with Mediterranean traditions; Barcelona at the turn of the century rivalled Paris as a centre of art, music, literature, and avant-garde publishing. Gaudi absorbed this culture and was a committed nationalist as a young man, but in later life he turned to Catholicism and became deeply religious and ascetic. His eclectic practice mixed forms from the past in a complex experimentation with space, materials, and decoration: this kind of artistic freedom was made possible only by unusual social conditions including Barcelona's economic prosperity at the turn of the century and the existence of highly skilled artisans in Catalonia. This volume analyzes Gaudi's work systematically and in detail, from the Guell Palace to the Guell Park, through to the Sagrada Familia.

Описание: Carlos Ferrater Lambarri was born in 1944 in Barcelona, where he graduated in architecture from the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura in 1971. Since then he has worked as a designer in a professional studio, the architect Joan Guibernau becoming an associate in 1993. In 2001 he was appointed Professor of the Reale Academia Catalana de Belles Artes de Sant Jordi. His major realizations include the residential complex of S. Just Desvern in Barcelona, the extension project for Venice Cemetery and the "Rey Juan Carlos I" hotel in Barcelona. His originality lies in his art of combining modernism with particular features of local architecture. Ferrater's buildings, contrasting with urban realities, highlight the Mediterranean lifestyle. His latest designs, like the Impiva (Instituto de la pequena y mediana empresa de Valencia) Technology Research Centre at Castellon de la Plana, the Arruga Film Studios in Barcelona and the Congress Centre of Catalunia, reveal a new maturity in his prolific and increasingly reflective career.

Описание: This is a comprehensive monograph on the work of Achille Castiglioni, one of the most important designers of the second half of the 20th century. Architect and designer of lighting, exhibitions, and a variety of products, the Milan-based Castiglioni has been working since the 1930s and is today recognized around the world as one of the undisputed masters of contemporary design. He has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including a one-man show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in the early 1990s. Many of his products have been awarded with the prestigious Compasso d'oro prize. Achille Castiglioni was born in 1918. After his degree in architecture in 1944, he started his career, concentrating mostly in architecture, often in collaboration with his brother Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Immediately after the war, in response to the industrialization of Italy, he turned his activity mainly to industrial and exhibition design. During his long career he has created objects that have become international icons, including the Arco, Frisbi (1978) and Parentesi lamps (1971), the San Luca armchair, the Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci tables. His strikingly innovative creations reveal just how much design can reflect an era, defining trends and cultural values. This book is a chronological account of all of Castiglioni's activities as both an architect and designer, revealing the wide scope of work he has done and the sheer number of projects he has conceived. Based on an in-depth study of Castglioni's archives, the text features illustrations of every project accompanied by a full and critical description. With a rich array of photographs and other graphic material, this book covers the whole range of Castiglioni's work, from architecture to product design, from museum-planning to the creation of exhibition spaces.
