Описание: Polarization Spectroscopy of Ionized Gases describes the physical principles of the technique and its applications to remote sensing. Universal spectropolarimetric remote sensing has been applied to low pressure gas discharges in the laboratory and to non-thermal processes in the solar atmosphere.
Описание: The investigation of the properties of condensed matter using experimental nuclear methods is becoming increasingly important. An extremely broad range of techniques is used, including the use of particles, such as positrons and neutrons, ion beams, and the detection of radiation from nuclear decays or nuclear reactions.
Описание: The growing number of scientific and technological applications of plasma physics in the field of Aerospace Engineering requires that graduate students and professionals understand their principles. This introductory book is the expanded version of class notes of lectures I taught for several years to students of Aerospace Engineering and Physics. It is intended as a reading guide, addressed to students and non-specialists to tackle later with more advanced texts. To make the subject more accessible the book does not follow the usual organization of standard textbooks in this field and is divided in two parts. The first introduces the basic kinetic theory (molecular collisions, mean free path, etc.) of neutral gases in equilibrium in connection to the undergraduate physics courses. The basic properties of ionized gases and plasmas (Debye length, plasma frequencies, etc.) are addressed in relation to their equilibrium states and the collisional processes at the microscopic level. The physical description of short and long-range (Coulomb) collisions and the more relevant collisions (elementary processes) between electrons' ions and neutral atoms or molecules are discussed. The second part introduces the physical description of plasmas as a statistical system of interacting particles introducing advanced concepts of kinetic theory, (non-equilibrium distribution functions, Boltzmann collision operator, etc). The fluid transport equations for plasmas of electron ions and neutral atoms and the hydrodynamic models of interest in space science and plasma technology are derived. The plasma production in the laboratory in the context of the physics of electric breakdown is also discussed. Finally, among the myriad of aerospace applications of plasma physics, the low pressure microwave electron multipactor breakdown and plasma thrusters for space propulsion are presented in two separate chapters.

Описание: Nuclear physics is a field of physics that is concerned with the study of atomic nuclei, their constituents and interactions. The structure and properties of the nucleus can be understood from the classical and quantum mechanical approaches of liquid-drop model and the nuclear shell model respectively. Current research in nuclear physics studies nuclei under extreme conditions, such as under high excitation energy and high spin. Nuclei with extreme neutron-to-proton ratios can be artificially created, by the processes of nucleon transfer reactions or induced fusion reactions. Some of the significant areas of study in nuclear physics are nuclear decay processes, nuclear fusion and nuclear fission. Advances in nuclear physics have transformed the fields of medicine, warfare, energy, geology and archaeology. This book elucidates the advanced principles of nuclear physics and their applications in a multidisciplinary manner. It strives to provide a fair idea about this discipline and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances within this field. It attempts to assist those with a goal of delving into the field of nuclear physics.
Описание: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications MULTIPARTICLE QUANTUM SCATTERING WITH APPLICATIONS TO NUCLEAR, ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR PHYSICS is based on the proceedings of a workshop with the same title, which was an integral part of the 1994-1995 IMA program on "Waves and Scattering." We would like to thank Donald G. Truhlar and Barry Simon for their ex- cellent work as organizers of this meeting and as editors of the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE The workshop on Multiparticle Quantum Scattering with Applications to Nuclear, Atomic, and Molecular Physics was held June 12-16, 1995 at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications in the University of Min- nesota Twin Cities campus as part of the 1994-95 Program on Waves and Scattering. There were about seventy participants including the plenary lecturers whose contributions are included in this volume. The workshop was preceded by a two-day tutorial featuring lectures by Donald J. Kouri and Gian Michele Graf, and we are pleased that both Professors Graf and Kouri were able to write up their tutorials as opening chapters of this volume.
Описание: Presents a powerful new framework for fluid dynamics away from equilibrium, providing an essential resource to researchers in nuclear physics, cosmology, astrophysics and quantum many-body systems. Contains a comprehensive theory overview, numerical algorithms as well as applications to neutron stars, the early universe and high energy collisions.
Описание: Presents advanced topics and applications of relativistic quantum field theory. The application of quantum chromodynamics to high-energy particle scattering is discussed with concrete examples for how to compute QCD scattering cross sections. Experimental evidence for the existence of quarks and gluons is also presented.

Описание: Terahertz (THz) radiation with frequencies between 100 GHz and 30 THz has developed into an important tool of science and technology, with numerous applications in materials characterization, imaging, sensor technologies, and telecommunications. Recent progress in THz generation has provided ultrashort THz pulses with electric field amplitudes of up to several megavolts/cm. This development opens the new research field of nonlinear THz spectroscopy in which strong light-matter interactions are exploited to induce quantum excitations and/or charge transport and follow their nonequilibrium dynamics in time-resolved experiments. This book introduces methods of THz generation and nonlinear THz spectroscopy in a tutorial way, discusses the relevant theoretical concepts, and presents prototypical, experimental, and theoretical results in condensed matter physics. The potential of nonlinear THz spectroscopy is illustrated by recent research, including an overview of the relevant literature.
