More than 1.3 million Korean Americans live in the United States, the majority of them foreign-born immigrants and their children, the so-called 1.5 and second generations. While many sons and daughters of Korean immigrants outwardly conform to the stereotyped image of the upwardly mobile, highly educated super-achiever, the realities and challenges that the children of Korean immigrants face in their adult lives as their immigrant parents grow older and confront health issues that are far more complex. In Caring Across Generations, Grace J. Yoo and Barbara W. Kim explore how earlier experiences helping immigrant parents navigate American society have prepared Korean American children for negotiating and redefining the traditional gender norms, close familial relationships, and cultural practices that their parents expect them to adhere to as they reach adulthood. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 137 second and 1.5 generation Korean Americans, Yoo & Kim explore issues such as their childhood experiences, their interpreted cultural traditions and values in regards to care and respect for the elderly, their attitudes and values regarding care for aging parents, their observations of parents facing retirement and life changes, and their experiences with providing care when parents face illness or the prospects of dying. A unique study at the intersection of immigration and aging, Caring Across Generations provides a new look at the linked lives of immigrants and their families, and the struggles and triumphs that they face over many generations.

Описание: An innovative Asian feminist perspective on God's Spirit We live in a time of great racial strife and global conflict. How do we work toward healing, reconciliation, and justice among all people, regardless of race or gender? In Embracing the Other Grace Ji-Sun Kim demonstrates that it is possible only through God's Spirit. Working from a feminist Asian perspective, Kim develops a new constructive global pneumatology that works toward gender and racial-ethnic justice. She draws on concepts from Asian and indigenous cultures to reimagine the divine as "Spirit God" who is restoring shalom in the world. Through the power of Spirit God, Kim says, our brokenness is healed and we can truly love and embrace the Other.
Planetary Solidarity brings together leading Latina, womanist, Asian American, Anglican American, South American, Asian, European, and African woman theologians on the issues of doctrine, women, and climate justice. Because women make up the majority of the world's poor and tend to be more dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods and survival, they are more vulnerable when it comes to climate-related changes and catastrophes. Representing a subfield of feminist theology that uses doctrine as interlocutor, this book ask how Christian doctrine might address the interconnected suffering of women and the earth in an age of climate change. While doctrine has often stifled change, it also forms the thread that weaves Christian communities together. Drawing on postcolonial ecofeminist/womanist analysis and representing different ecclesial and denominational traditions, contributors use doctrine to envision possibilities for a deep solidarity with the earth and one another while addressing the intersection of gender, race, class, and ethnicity. The book is organized around the following doctrines: creation, the triune God, anthropology, sin, incarnation, redemption, the Holy Spirit, ecclesiology, and eschatology.
Описание: In An Ethnography of Hunger Kristin D. Phillips examines how rural farmers in central Tanzania negotiate the interconnected projects of subsistence, politics, and rural development. Writing against stereotypical Western media images of spectacular famine in Africa, she examines how people live with—rather than die from—hunger. Through tracing the seasonal cycles of drought, plenty, and suffering and the political cycles of elections, development, and state extraction, Phillips studies hunger as a pattern of relationships and practices that organizes access to food and profoundly shapes agrarian lives and livelihoods. Amid extreme inequality and unpredictability, rural people pursue subsistence by alternating between—and sometimes combining—rights and reciprocity, a political form that she calls "subsistence citizenship." Phillips argues that studying subsistence is essential to understanding the persistence of global poverty, how people vote, and why development projects succeed or fail.

Child loss is not a new phenomena. It's been with us since the beginning of time. You would think after all these years, we'd be better equipped to help mothers through such a mournful time. Unfortunately, there's little assistance available. Not in social programs or, sadly, even in the faith community. In fact, depending on the nature of the mother's loss, and her perceived part in it, comfort or consolation may be completely absent. It leaves many women feeling isolated and alone, remaining silent, never speaking their truth, only spiraling into despair.
Yet, hope is available. It is found in the hearing and studying of the stories and perserverance of women who share the experience of this most devastating loss. Together these woman are sisters. Sisters who have much to share and teach each other about the power of feminine strength and endurance. Some of these women live today and bravely share their stories. Others lived long ago, but their tales speak to us through the pages of the Bible. All give childless mothers hope and encouragement.
In Sunshine and Daniel: Seeking Grace in Lost Motherhood, author Kim Paris Upshaw takes us on a journey from loss to love, walking hand in hand with these women, our sisters. With each step along the pages of this unique storytelling-Bible study experience, these special mothers learn to be free from the shame, guilt and sadness of their loss to receive God's amazing grace, peace and love in their lives again. Kim artfully interweaves her own story of the loss of her two children with the stories of these women, reminding each reader, "You are not alone, my sister Your story is our story. Yet, there is more in store for you. And there's more living for you to do, and love for you to give."

How does it feel to be a child who is 'different'?
Noah's Story explains in simple language for young readers how a child with high functioning autism (Asperger's Syndrome) experiences everyday life. Author Grace Kim wrote the book to help her son Noah, his friends and teachers understand his diagnosis. Written in Noah's voice, it uses examples of some of the behaviours of a person whose brain works differently and offers practical suggestions for how others can respond. Noah was consulted to ensure the text represented his feelings and his line drawings illustrate the book.
Noah's Story presents the message "Sometimes I will make mistakes but I am learning just like you" with beautiful simplicity. Teena Raffa-Mulligan, author.
