Описание: It was more of a mob scene than a gathering of bereaved relatives at the reading of Grandma Charlotte's will. Who was the chosen one? What was the reward for suffering through the required 'visit' on their sixteenth birthday? The old lady dropped anyone from her will who didn't visit. Gold and jewels hidden in her spooky old house was common knowledge, so everybody went. Between his psychic grandmother and gold-digging relatives, the main family relationship Frank knew was to be as distant as possible.Frank got Grandma's decrepit Victorian house, along with the sneers and snarls of relatives he didn't know. He also found he had to move into the old place immediately. He found no gold or hidden jewels there. The only things locked away were home-canned jars of tomatoes from 1942. What he did find were visions of his dead grandmother. There were also files with his name, written long before he was born. There were also things called touch stones and a girl he'd never heard of. The visions could literally suck him dry. Frank's life could end soon, and in a most unpleasant fashion unless he learned how to keep his focus.

Описание: "[A] must-read for students of history and historians alike."-Washington Book ReviewAlthough southern Poland and western Ukraine are not often thought of in terms of decisive battles in World War I, the impulses that precipitated the battle for Galicia in August 1914-and the unprecedented carnage that resulted-effectively doomed the Austro-Hungarian Empire just six weeks into the war.In Fall of the Double Eagle, John R. Schindler explains how Austria-Hungary, despite military weakness and the foreseeable ill consequences, consciously chose war in that fateful summer of 1914. Through close examination of the Austro-Hungarian military, especially its elite general staff, Schindler shows how even a war that Vienna would likely lose appeared preferable to the “foul peace” the senior generals loathed. After Serbia outgunned the polyglot empire in a humiliating defeat, and the offensive into Russian Poland ended in the massacre of more than four hundred thousand Austro-Hungarians in just three weeks, the empire never recovered. While Austria-Hungary’s ultimate defeat and dissolution were postponed until the autumn of 1918, the late summer of 1914 on the plains and hills of Galicia sealed its fate.
Описание: Pope Paul VI characterized the Second Vatican Council's Declaration on Religious Freedom -- Dignitatis Humanae -- as one of the greatest documents of Vatican II. It is also perhaps the most intensely debated document of the Council; both the drafting of the Declaration of Religious Freedom and its reception have been marked by deep disagreements about what this teaching means for the Church. In this book David Schindler and Nicholas Healy promote a deeper understanding of this important document. In addition to presenting a new translation of the approved text of the Declaration, Freedom, Truth, and Human Dignity makes available for the first time in English the five drafts of the document that were presented to the Council bishops leading up to the final version. The book also includes an original interpretive essay on Dignitatis Humanae by Schindler and an essay on the genesis and redaction history of the text by Healy.

Описание: R.M. Schindler (1887-1953) is a pivotal Modernist architect who, during his career, remained largely unrecognized by the critical establishment. This text provides a comprehensive evaluation of his entire career as both a designer and a theoretician, during which time Schindler designed more than 500 projects, over 150 of which were built, most of these in the Los Angeles area. Judith Sheine, herself a practising architect, takes a more expository than theoretical approach to Schindler's work, and concentrates on the uniqueness of Schindler's Space Architecture - an architecture to be experienced directly, through occupying the interior space. The volume is an analysis of Schindler's work, influences and buildings, rather than a strict biographical account of his life. It features archival material and new photographs of important buildings, as well as over 150 redrawn plans, sections and diagrams.

Описание:
It is commonly observed that behind many of the political and cultural issues that we face today there are impoverished conceptions of freedom, which, according to D. C. Schindler, we have inherited from the classical liberal tradition without a sufficient awareness of its implications. Freedom from Reality presents a critique of the deceptive and ultimately self-subverting character of the modern notion of freedom, retrieving an alternative view through a new interpretation of the ancient tradition. While many have critiqued the inadequacy of identifying freedom with arbitrary choice, this book seeks to penetrate to the metaphysical roots of the modern conception by going back, through an etymological study, to the original sense of freedom.
Schindler begins by uncovering a contradiction in John Locke’s seminal account of human freedom. Rather than dismissing it as a mere “academic” problem, Schindler takes this contradiction as a key to understanding the strange paradoxes that abound in the contemporary values and institutions founded on the modern notion of liberty: the very mechanisms that intend to protect modern freedom render it empty and ineffectual. In this respect, modern liberty is “diabolical”—a word that means, at its roots, that which “drives apart” and so subverts. This is contrasted with the “symbolical” (a “joining-together”), which, he suggests, most basically characterizes the premodern sense of reality. This book will appeal to students and scholars of political philosophy (especially political theorists), philosophers in the continental or historical traditions, and cultural critics with a philosophical bent.
