Описание: From the arrival of Captain James Cook in 1770 to classic children's tale Dot and the Kangaroo , Ken Gelder and Rachel Weaver examine hunting narratives in novels, visual art and memoirs to discover how the kangaroo became a favourite quarry, a relished food source, an object of scientific fascination, and a source of violent conflict between settlers and Aboriginal people. The kangaroo hunt worked as a rite of passage and an expression of settler domination over native species and land. But it also enabled settlers to begin to comprehend the complexity of bush ecology, raising early concerns about species extinction and the need for conservation and the preservation of habitat.

Описание:
It was June of 2019, and thirty-one-year-old interior designer Dana Ch. Levy had just gotten engaged-but then she received bad news. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. In Boobless Mammal, she shares the story of her journey.
In this memoir, she tells how she broke off her engagement, froze her eggs before starting chemotherapy, and began treatment. Levy chronicles a life in turmoil, dealing with a terrifying diagnosis. She embarks on a healing journey where she embraces her feelings with honesty. The experience gave her clarity, making her realize the story she had been telling herself-the romantic one-was the wrong one. Cancer served as a catalyst to open windows to emotions that had been closed for a long time.
Boobless Mammal revisits painful memories from her childhood and adolescence, turning the pain into life lessons. Despite the drama, Levy's witty sense of humor and sarcasm prevails, bringing levity to each situation. From her Jewish home in Lima, Peru, where she currently lives, to the tropical weather of Miami and finally, the vibrant city of New York, the three become meaningful, yet contrasting settings.
Описание: Examines what literature reveals about human attitudes towards elephants and who shows compassion towards them. Elephants are in dire straits – again. They were virtually extirpated from much of Africa by European hunters in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but their numbers resurged for a while in the heyday of late-colonial conservation efforts in the twentieth. Now, according to one estimate, an elephant is being killed every fifteen minutes. This is at the same time that the reasons for being especially compassionate and protective towards elephants are now so well-known that they have become almost a cliché: their high intelligence, rich emotional lives including a capacity for mourning, caring matriarchal societal structures, that strangely charismatic grace. Saving elephants is one of the iconic conservation struggles of our time. As a society we must aspire to understand how and why people develop compassion – or fail to do so – and what stories we tell ourselves about animals that reveal the relationship between ourselves and animals. This book is the first study to probe the primary features, and possible effects, of some major literary genres as they pertain to elephants south of the Zambezi over three centuries: indigenous forms, early European travelogues, hunting accounts, novels, game ranger memoirs, scientists’ accounts, and poems. It examines what these literatures imply about the various and diverse attitudes towards elephants, about who shows compassion towards them, in what ways and why. It is the story of a developing contestation between death and compassion, between those who kill and those who love and protect.Death and Compassion is the first study to probe various literary genres. Описание: As defined by conservation biologist Thomas Fleishner, natural history is “a practice of intentional, focused receptivity to the more-than-human world . . . one of the oldest continuous human traditions.” Seldom is this idea so clearly reflected as in classic works of American fiction of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.John Cullen Gruesser’s edited volume Animals in the American Classics: How Natural History Inspired Great Fiction features essays by prominent literary scholars that showcase natural history and the multifaceted role of animals in well-known works of fiction, from Washington Irving in the early nineteenth century to Cormac McCarthy in the late twentieth century, and including short stories and novels by Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Jack London, John Steinbeck, and Harper Lee.As an introduction to or a new way of thinking about some of the best-known and most beloved literary texts this nation has produced, Animals in the American Classics considers fundamental questions of ethics and animal intelligence as well as similarities among racism, ageism, misogyny, and speciesism. With their awareness of Poe’s “more-than-casual knowledge of natural science,” Mark Twain’s proto–animal rights sensibilities, and Hurston’s training as an anthropologist, the contributors show that by drawing attention to and thinking like an animal, fiction tests the limits of humanity.
