Описание: This book contains an inclusive compilation of perspectives about the Arctic Ocean with contributions that extend from Indigenous residents and early career scientists to Foreign Ministers, involving perspectives across the spectrum of subnational-national-international jurisdictions. The Arctic Ocean is being transformed with global climate warming into a seasonally ice-free sea, creating challenges as well as opportunities that operate short-to-long term, underscoring the necessity to make informed decisions across a continuum of urgencies from security to sustainability time scales. The Arctic Ocean offers a case study with lessons that are especially profound at this moment when humankind is exposed to a pandemic, awakening a common interest in survival across our globally-interconnected civilization unlike any period since the Second World War. This second volume in the Informed Decisionmaking for Sustainability series reveals that building global inclusion involves common interests to address changes effectively “for the benefit of all on Earth across generations.”

Описание: This multidisciplinary book provides new insights and hope for sustainable prosperity given recent developments in economics – but only if swift and strong actions consistent with Earth’s biophysical limits and principles of justice are universally taken. It is one thing to put limits on resource throughput and waste generation to conform with the ecosphere’s biocapacity. It is another thing to efficiently allocate a sustainable rate of resource throughput and ensure it is equitably distributed in the form of final goods and services. While the separate but interdependent decisions regarding throughput, distribution, and allocation are the essence of ecological economics, dealing with them in a world that needs to cure its growth addiction requires a realistic understanding of macroeconomics and the fiscal capacity of currency-issuing central governments. Sustainable prosperity demands that we harness this understanding to carefully regulate the rate of resource throughput and manipulate macroeconomic outcomes to facilitate human flourishing. The book begins by outlining humanity’s current predicament of gross ecological overshoot and laments the half-century of missed opportunities since The Limits to Growth (1972). What was once economic growth has become, in many high-income countries, uneconomic growth (additional costs exceeding additional benefits), which is no longer advancing wellbeing. Meanwhile, low-income nations need a dose of efficient and equitable growth to escape poverty while protecting their environments and the global commons. The book argues for a synthesis of our increasing knowledge of the ecosphere’s limited carrying capacity and the power of governments to harness, transform, and distribute resources for the common good. Central to this synthesis must be a correct understanding of the difference between financial constraints and real resource constraints. While the latter apply to everyone, the former do not apply to currency-issuing central governments, which have much more capacity for corrective action than mainstream thinking perceives. The book joins the growing chorus of authoritative voices calling for a complete overhaul of the dominant economic system. We conclude with policy recommendations based on a new economics that, if implemented, would come close to guaranteeing a sustainable and prosperous future. Upon reading this book, at least one thing should be crystal clear: business as usual is not a viable option.

Описание:
From the Foreword by David Orr: ." . . T]he authors here describe a curriculum of applied hope. No discipline is exempt from the effort to extend awareness of our implicatedness in the world, and from the effort to create a better future than that in prospect. As scholars and teachers, they are responding to the intellectual and moral imperatives of "the long emergency.." . . The overwhelming fact of our time is that life on Earth is in peril, humans are the cause, and that no amount of tinkering at the margin of the status quo will do. We have every reason to reexamine our beliefs, worldviews, institutions, cultural foundations, and manner of living - and get down to work."

Sustainability education is increasingly taking a lead role in transforming the landscape of higher education, serving as a catalyst for the integration of cutting edge pedagogical practices, including project and problem-based learning, multidisciplinary learning, and transformative and collaborative education. This book documents innovative pedagogical approaches to infusing sustainability into the curriculum in the humanities and social sciences on college campuses ranging from small liberal arts colleges to major research institutions. Three sections include: 1) Conceptual Frameworks: Sustainability's Challenges to Traditional Curriculum, Disciplinary Frameworks, and Educational Paradigms; 2) In the Classroom: Case Studies and Innovative Pedagogies; 3) The Campus as Site for Place-Based Learning.

Neil Weissman, Provost and Professor of History at Dickinson College, writes: "The essays in this collection are richly diverse. . . .Like sustainability itself, the volume infuses theory with practical application. The contributors demonstrate the ways in which a single course can serve as a powerful change agent for an entire campus, how to build bridges between faculty and administrators, and even how to move forward on modest budgets. Teaching Sustainability provides a valuable conceptual and practical toolbox for faculty, students, and administrators to (as David Orr notes in the foreword) 'get down to work.'"

Описание: This ambitious text is a monograph about human experiences concerning the potentialities, capacities, and features of humankind from the wholeness of the collective mind body spirit. The purpose in reframing human endeavors is for enhanced alignment for livability and sustainability. This book departs from the concept and practice of “design and technology” and argues that most crises that endanger and destruct our ecological livability and sustainability come from our way of thinking and doing with “design and technology” based on the necessity for control. It is the control for overcoming the fear of scarcity, starvation, and the unknown. This book is rather an attempt to find alternate way of decision-making thru holistic methods. It appeals to researchers working in design, sustainability, architecture and urban studies.

Описание: If businesses and other organizations are to meet the many and complex challenges of sustainable development, then they all, both public and private, need to embed sustainability considerations into their decision-making and reporting. However, the translation of this aspiration into effective action is often inhibited by the lack of systems and procedures that take sustainability into account. Accounting for Sustainability: Practical Insights will help organizations to address these issues.

The book sets out a number of tools and approaches that have been developed and applied by leading organizations to:Embed sustainability into decision-making, extending beyond an organization's boundaries to take into account suppliers, customers and other stakeholdersMeasure and link sustainability and financial performanceIntegrate sustainability into 'mainstream' reporting, both to management and external stakeholdersIn-depth cases studies from Aviva, BT, the Environment Agency, EDF Energy, HSBC, Novo Nordisk, Sainsbury's and West Sussex County Council show in detail how accounting for sustainability works in practice in a wide range of organizational contexts. Описание: This volume is a compilation on issues related to sustainable practices in geo-environmental engineering, particularly as applying to developing nations such as India. While, the developed world has already developed some solutions such as landfills, developments in landfills, barriers and liners in the North America and waste-to-energy and waste incineration in Europe, developing countries like India are trying to figure out ways which suit the present condition without compromising the future needs and comforts. This volume presents case studies on the various problems and solutions adopted for different sites.

Although a common approach for all the problems is not feasible or recommend, this collection aims to provide a compendium on the current efforts underway and to help achieve common ground for the practitioners and researchers involved. The works included here give insight to the possible development of resilient and sustainable structures (like offshore wind turbines) and energy geotechnics. The book covers topics such as liners and barrier systems, use of recycled and waste materials, waste management and hazard assessment, sustainable infrastructure, and sustainability and the environment.

The contents of this book will be useful to researchers and professionals working in geo-environmental engineering. The book will also be useful to policy makers interested in understanding geotechnical concerns related to sustainable development.
