Описание: International migration remains the orphan child of globalization. Rapid development from the last quarter of the twentieth century has resulted in a world more unequal than ever before. Mobility of people needs to be understood as the natural corollary to international trade and capital. Sustaining global economic growth rates and progressing towards an equitable global order will be predicated substantially on the free movement of people. Transnational economic migration will be the next frontier of globalization. There is urgent need to move to a rule-based, binding set of principles that would require states to willingly cede some degree of their sovereignty on matters of economic migration to a multilateral process. Failure to do so will likely generate conflict of an order that can jeopardize the very basis of a modern, progressive and democratic future for all. This book tells an interesting storyof development as seen from the lens of mobilityof how important migration has been, is, and will increasingly be for human development.

Описание:
While the subject of migration has received enormous attention in academic journals and books across the social sciences, introductory texts on the matter are few and far between. Even fewer books have explored migration through a critical and explicit engagement with spatial concepts.
Now in its second edition, Migration remains the only text in more than a decade that emphasizes how geographical or spatial concepts can be used critically to understand migration. The multi-disciplinary text draws on insights from human geography, political science, social anthropology, sociology, and to a lesser extent economics. All of the chapters focus on key terms, theories, concepts, and issues concerning migration and immigration. The book argues that in the context of migration, two opposing 'spatial positions' have emerged in the wake of the critique of 'methodological nationalism'. On one hand is the significance of 'transnationalism', and on the other, the importance of 'sub-national' or local processes. Both require more nuance and integration, while many of the concepts and theories which have thus far neglected space or have not been 'treated' spatially, need to be re-written with space in mind. Pedagogically the text combines a carefully defined structure, accessible language, boxes that explore case studies of migrant-related experiences in particular places, annotated suggestions for further reading, useful websites and relevant films and summary questions for student learning at the end of each chapter.
Migration provides a critical, multi-disciplinary, advanced, and theoretically informed introduction to migration and immigration. Revised and updated with new material, new maps and illustrations and an accompanying website (https: //migration2ndedition.wordpress.com/), it continues to be aimed at advanced undergraduates and Masters-level graduate students undertaking courses on migration and immigration.

Описание:
In The Oxford Handbook of the Politics of International Migration, leading migration experts Marc Rosenblum and Daniel Tichenor gather together 29 field specialists in an authoritative volume on the issue. Integrating the perspectives of the wide variety of fields that hold a stake in the study of migration-political science, sociology, economics, anthropology-this book presents an unprecedented interdisciplinary look at an issue that defines the modern era: the large-scale movement of people across international borders.
The volume begins with three chapters analyzing the origins and causes of migration, including both source and destination states. The second section then asks: what are the consequences of migration at both ends of the migration chain? Chapters in this section consider economics, the effects of migration on parties and political participation, and social and cultural effects. A third group of chapters focuses on immigration policy. These include primers on the history and dimensions of migration policy, as well as examinations of the effects of public opinion, interest groups, and international relations on policymaking. The volume then considers aspects of the immigrant experience: segmented assimilation among Asian Americans, histories of U.S. immigrant incorporation and of race and migration, transnationalism, and gendered aspects of migration. Finally, five chapters examine contemporary issues, including transborder crime and terrorism, migration and organized labor, international regionalism, normative debates about citizenship and immigration, and the recent history of U.S. immigration policymaking.
Covering the major questions and challenges related to the issue, The Oxford Handbook of the Politics of International Migration is a comprehensive resource for students, scholars, and policy experts alike.
