Описание: In 1987, Nathaniel Nyok, tormented by thoughts of missing parents and siblings, fled a bloody scene and a burning village in Sudan. Wishing to live at any cost and driven by a confrontational heart-pounding fear, he journeyed through the wild to seek sanctuary in Ethiopia. At eight, he had just capitulated to an orphan-like life with a new title, A Lost Boy of Sudan, living in a refugee camp for fourteen years without a family and a future. The refugee camp became a cage that was too confining, and he languished with a sense of loss. As he battled the loss of home and family, he chose education over revenge as the road to freedom, a road that eventually brought him to America, land of freedom and rules, welcomes and prejudices. In a turning point of surreptitious blessing, grilled by United States immigration lawyers and medical experts in a two-year vetting process of interviews and medical evaluations, he was offered an approval letter, becoming one of a few Lost Boys admitted to the United States. In 2001, he resettled in Atlanta, Georgia, in a community that welcomed him, a stranger, with both joy and contempt. This story portrays his transition to American culture-from the stylishness and glam of Hollywood to battling the prejudices of his new community-as a time of both confusion and hope.
Описание: Chol (Mayan) Folktales deftly combines high-quality and thoughtfully edited transcriptions of oral storytelling with translation and narrative analysis, documenting and analyzing a trove of Chol folklore. The work provides a look into the folktale culture of the contemporary Maya presented with a rare and innovative theoretical framework. The rich Chol oral narrative tradition is represented by eleven stories, each printed in the original language of the storytellers with parallel English translations and accompanied by a brief introduction that provides the relevant cultural and mythological background. Included with eight of the stories is a link to an audio clip of the tale told aloud in the Chol language. In addition, Chol (Mayan) Folktales introduces a model for the analysis of narratives that can be used to demonstrate the existence of a tradition of storytelling applicable to other Maya lore, including Classic period hieroglyphic texts. Creating a nuanced sense of the Mayan oral tradition and revealing a highly structured literary style, this collection provides insight into contemporary Maya culture as well as a greater understanding of Classic period society. It will be of interest to students and scholars of folklore and literature and to anthropologists and linguists.

Описание: In the Republic of South Sudan, particularly, the Sudd wetland; land competition and land disputes have intensifies for the last nine years. When peace came to South Sudan in the year 2005, the management of land and its resources has been one of the critical challenges facing the Government in Juba and all the 10 States. More recently, the exploitation of high-value natural resources, including oil, and other minerals has often been cited as a key factor that trigger violent conflicts in the South Sudan. In the Sudd wetland, however, increasing competition and conflict for diminishing renewable resources, such as land, water, fisheries, and grazing pastures has been on the rise. Further still, this is being further aggravated by population growth, proliferations of small arms in the hands of civilians, competition over natural resources by international corporations, commercialization of land and climate change. This small research on land conflict in Republic South Sudan a leeway to other researchers, students, and civil society who might be interested on land issues.

Описание: The Ch'ol Maya who live in the western Mexican state of Chiapas are direct descendants of the Maya of the Classic period. Exploring their history and culture, volume editor Karen Bassie-Sweet and the other authors assembled here uncover clear continuity between contemporary Maya rituals and beliefs and their ancient counterparts. With evocative and thoughtful essays by leading scholars of Maya culture, The Ch'ol Maya of Chiapas, the first collection to focus fully on the Ch'ol Maya, takes readers deep into ancient caves and reveals new dimensions of Ch'ol cosmology. In contemporary Ch'ol culture the contributors find a wealth of historical material that they then interweave with archaeological data to yield surprising and illuminating insights. The colonial and twentieth-century descendants of the Postclassic period Ch'ol and Lacandon Ch'ol, for instance, provide a window on the history and conquest of the early Maya. Several authors examine Early Classic paintings in the Ch'ol ritual cave known as Jolja that document ancient cave ceremonies not unlike Ch'ol rituals performed today, such as petitioning a cave-dwelling mountain spirit for health, rain, and abundant harvests. Other essays investigate deities identified with caves, mountains, lightning, and meteors to trace the continuity of ancient Maya beliefs through the centuries, in particular the ancient origin of contemporary rituals centering on the Ch'ol mountain deity Don Juan. An appendix containing three Ch'ol folktales and their English translations rounds out the volume. Charting paths literal and figurative to earlier trade routes, pre-Columbian sites, and ancient rituals and beliefs, The Ch'ol Maya of Chiapas opens a fresh, richly informed perspective on Maya culture as it has evolved and endured over the ages.
