Описание:

A comprehensive history of PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress disorder--and its predecessor diagnoses, including soldiers heart, railroad spine, and shell shock--was recognized as a psychiatric disorder in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The psychic impacts of train crashes, wars, and sexual shocks among children first drew psychiatric attention. Later, enormous numbers of soldiers suffering from battlefield traumas returned from the world wars. It was not until the 1980s that PTSD became a formal diagnosis, in part to recognize the intense psychic suffering of Vietnam War veterans and women with trauma-related personality disorders. PTSD now occupies a dominant place in not only the mental health professions but also major social institutions and mainstream culture, making it the signature mental disorder of the early twenty-first century.

In PTSD, Allan V. Horwitz traces the fluctuations in definitions of and responses to traumatic psychic conditions. Arguing that PTSD, perhaps more than any other diagnostic category, is a lens for showing major historical changes in conceptions of mental illness, he surveys the conditions most likely to produce traumas, the results of those traumas, and how to evaluate the claims of trauma victims.

Illuminating a number of central issues about psychic disturbances more generally--including the relative importance of external stressors and internal vulnerabilities in causing mental illness, the benefits and costs of mental illness labels, and the influence of gender on expressions of mental disturbance--PTSD is a compact yet comprehensive survey. The book will appeal to diverse audiences, including the educated public, students across the psychological and social sciences, and trauma victims who are interested in socio-historical approaches to their condition.

Описание:

This book assesses the extent of the authority that the Organisation of American States holds over the key issues confronting its member states. It explores the extent and significance of the transformation of the OAS since 1991: its roots, the reasons for and extent of its emergence, and the role that the organisation currently plays in the promotion of regional governance in the two key issue-areas of security and the defense and promotion of democratic norms and principles of good governance. By assessing where the OAS has succeeded and failed, Horwitz provides an in-depth explanation of how cooperation and consensus works in the Inter-American system.

This study reports on indications that the OAS is looking for ways to act multilaterally in certain security issues, for instance trying to develop a drug regime. The OAS is also actively defending and promoting democratic norms and rules. Presently, the Western Hemisphere is at a crossroads and it is too soon to tell whether the OAS will adapt and succeed or whether the efforts to integrate OAS member states through specific common security policies and the democracy paradigm will add to the list of previous regional integration failures.

This book is an important contribution to the debate on the role of International Organisations in shaping the Inter-American system. By looking at specific cases such as the defence of democracy, where the OAS is working through specific agencies and promoting cooperation and consensus, we are able to discern the successes and failures of the OAS.

The Syntax of the Real: Beyond Semantics and Its Dialectics

Описание: If the old existentialism said that existence precedes essence, the new existentialism articulated by The Syntax of the Real says that syntax precedes semantics. As opposed to the history of philosophy, which has been dominated semantico-centric ontologies, The Syntax of Real endeavors to articulate (perhaps the first) syntactic ontology. One of the most important theses of our time was articulated by the late John Haugeland. This thesis states that if you take care of the syntax, the semantics come for free. While Haugeland understood this thesis as one intervening in philosophy of mind and relating to the nature of artificial intelligence, The Syntax of Real both critiques of Haugeland's understand of his own thesis and articulates its actual ontological implications beyond its relevance to the nature of the mental. Our understanding of syntax must be broadened beyond the linguistic determination of this term if we are to grasp the nature of the real. After detailing the inherent problems of semantic ontologies, this manuscript deduces the very nature of the real from the point of departure of all post-Cartesian thought-the cogito. Semantic nihilism is not advocated. Rather as opposed to other theories of the semantic, a theory of operational semantics is elucidated. The Syntax of the Real articulates its vision both via engagement with well-known philosophers (for instance, the neo-Meinongian theories of the wunderkinder of contemporary European Philosophy, Markus Gabriel and Tristan Garcia, are subjected to critique) as well as pop culture (for example, an episode of the original Star Trek is analyzed and an engagement with the recent film Arrival makes up the conclusion). Warning: This text is not an attempt to articulate or analyze the obscurantist onto-babble of Francois Laruelle. Its orientation, if anything, is Lacanian. Table of Contents 1. Описание: National Bestseller

For all who remain intrigued by the legacy of the Civil War -- reenactors, battlefield visitors, Confederate descendants and other Southerners, history fans, students of current racial conflicts, and more -- this ten-state adventure is part travelogue, part social commentary and always good-humored. "Splendid." -Roy Blount, Jr., The New York Times Book Review

When prize-winning war correspondent Tony Horwitz leaves the battlefields of Bosnia and the Middle East for a peaceful corner of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he thinks he's put war zones behind him. But awakened one morning by the crackle of musket fire, Horwitz starts filing front-line dispatches again this time from a war close to home, and to his own heart.

Propelled by his boyhood passion for the Civil War, Horwitz embarks on a search for places and people still held in thrall by America's greatest conflict. The result is an adventure into the soul of the unvanquished South, where the ghosts of the Lost Cause are resurrected through ritual and remembrance.

In Virginia, Horwitz joins a band of 'hardcore' reenactors who crash-diet to achieve the hollow-eyed look of starved Confederates; in Kentucky, he witnesses Klan rallies and calls for race war sparked by the killing of a white man who brandishes a rebel flag; at Andersonville, he finds that the prison's commander, executed as a war criminal, is now exalted as a martyr and hero; and in the book's climax, Horwitz takes a marathon trek from Antietam to Gettysburg to Appomattox in the company of Robert Lee Hodge, an eccentric pilgrim who dubs their odyssey the 'Civil Wargasm.'

Written with Horwitz's signature blend of humor, history, and hard-nosed journalism, Confederates in the Attic brings alive old battlefields and new ones 'classrooms, courts, country bars' where the past and the present collide, often in explosive ways. Poignant and picaresque, haunting and hilarious, it speaks to anyone who has ever felt drawn to the mythic South and to the dark romance of the Civil War.

Описание: Carmer and Grit investigate a mysteriously magical flying circus in the follow-up to"a fun and frolicking middle grade adventure full of enough fantasy, humor and heart to make giddy even the most finicky reader." (BookPage)

Shortly after saving the faeries of Skemantis, magician's apprentice Felix Carmer III and his faerie companion, Grit, head out to see the world. They soon come across a mysteriously magical flying circus. As they get to know the outlandish world of Rinka Tinka's Roving Wonder Show, it becomes clear there's something not quite normal about this circus or its inventor-and that recent airship disasters plaguing nearby Driftside City may have a sinister explanation.

Fans of Greenglass House and the Lockwood & Co. series will love the thrills and chills of Carmer and Grit, Book 2: The Crooked Castle as it takes readers up in the air with a flying circus, under the sea to the evil Unseelie kingdom, through a terrifying magical snowstorm, and on a chase with the menacing Wild Hunt.
