Описание: Like the canaries that alerted miners to a poisonous atmosphere, issues of race point to underlying problems in society that ultimately affect everyone, not just minorities. Now, in a powerful and challenging book, Lani Guinier and Gerald Torres propose a radical new way to confront race in the twenty-first century.
Описание: An intimate study of the imaginative, subversive and often highly mischievous world of British anti-militarism
Engages with groups including Campaign Against Arms Trade, Stop the Arms Fair, the Space Hijackers. Smash EDO and the Plowshares Movement
Draws on a range of critical traditions including poststructuralism, feminism, queer theory, postcolonialism and anarchism
Develops a new account of the nature and limits of militarism, as understood from the perspective of its opponents
Makes a case for the radical and ethical potential of prefigurative direct action
In the past 15 years, anti-militarist activists in the UK have auctioned off a tank outside an arms fair, superglued themselves to Lockheed Martin's central London offices and stopped a battleship with a canoe. They have also challenged militarism on an everyday level in many other ways. This book tells the story of their resistance. It explores why anti-militarists take part in such actions, considers the politics of different tactics and examines the tensions and debates within the movement.
As it explores the multifaceted, imaginative and highly subversive world of anti-militarism, the book also makes two overarching arguments. First, that anti-militarists can help us to understand militarism in novel and useful ways. And secondly, that the methods and ideas used by anti-militarists can be a potent force for radical political change.

Описание:
The United Nations Security Council has primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. In discharging its powers it must act in accordance with the Purposes and Principles of the UN, and observe the rules governing voting and procedure established in the Organisation's Charter. The Council adopts mandatory resolutions that may establish obligations for members and non-members, and such obligations trump conflicting obligations originating from any other international agreement. Member States must cooperate with the Organisation and among themselves, in the implementation of any action prescribed by the Council against States whose behaviour the Council considers an act of aggression, or a threat to, or breach of, international peace and security.
This book analyses resistance to Security Council resolutions and puts forward a theory of lawful resistance. Sufyan Droubi takes a positivist approach to the UN Charter regarding it as a constitution. Special emphasis is placed on the construction of the Charter's meaning through the practice of both organs and Members of the UN and on the need to enhance the effectiveness of the Organization with due respect to the rule of law. The book proposes that nonviolent resistance to a mandatory resolution of the Security Council, on grounds that the latter is incompatible with the Charter or jus cogens norms, may be considered lawful under the Charter if some elements are present.
In exploring a number of case studies of individual and collective State resistance to mandatory Council resolutions, the book proposes that resistance may function as a rudimentary instrument of accountability and protection of the Charter and jus cogens, in the absence of more mature mechanisms of judicial review. The book will be of excellent use and interest to scholars and students of constitutional international law and international relations.

Автор: Chaz Bufe, Daniel Holland Название: Death Wins All Wars: Resisting the Draft in the 1960s, a Memoir ISBN: 1947071351 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781947071353 Издательство: Gazelle Book Services Рейтинг: Цена: 3207.00 р. Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ.
Описание: While Daniel Holland's memoir details his involvement in the draft resistance movement of the 1960s, the impetus to share his story now comes from the dangerous new president and congress that have taken control of the United States and threaten to plunge our nation into war. People of age to fight in today's conflicts were not yet born when the lessons of Vietnam were being learned, so this book may serve as a guide to the decisions they face in this contemporary, volatile world. Holland alternates chapters about the breaking news of the time with personal memories and reflections on his own coming of age, portraying a growing consciousness and an evolution of youthful naivete into committed antiwar activism. Then his focus turns to the legal adventures that follow: indictment, arrest, arraignment, defending himself at trial, and sentencing. Holland also shares episodes of draft board raids, secret rooms, and the day-to-day responsibilities of a full-time activist. He follows a surprise ending with a thoughtful afterword contemplating our personal responsibilities for peace.

Описание: Based on fieldwork and statistical analysis, this book explains how local social organization and cohesion enable both covert and overt nonviolent strategies, including avoidance, cultures of peace, protest, and negotiation. These `autonomy` strategies help civilians retain their agency and avoid becoming helpless victims by limiting the inroads of armed groups.
