Описание: By tracing the largely forgotten eighteenth-century migration of elite mixed-race individuals from Jamaica to Great Britain, Children of Uncertain Fortune reinterprets the evolution of British racial ideologies as a matter of negotiating family membership. Using wills, legal petitions, family correspondences, and inheritance lawsuits, Daniel Livesay is the first scholar to follow the hundreds of children born to white planters and Caribbean women of color who crossed the ocean for educational opportunities, professional apprenticeships, marriage prospects, or refuge from colonial prejudices. The presence of these elite children of color in Britain pushed popular opinion in the British Atlantic world toward narrower conceptions of race and kinship. Members of Parliament, colonial assemblymen, merchant kings, and cultural arbiters - the very people who decided Britain' colonial policies, debated abolition, passed marital laws, and arbitrated inheritance disputes - rubbed shoulders with these mixed-race Caribbean migrants in parlors and sitting rooms. Upper-class Britons also resented colonial transplants and coveted their inheritances; family intimacy gave way to racial exclusion. By the early nineteenth century, relatives had become strangers.

Описание: Claymore for hire-the story of the Scottish mercenary There have always been mercenaries and some nations have a better temperament for the trade than others. Mercenaries, both historically and present day, have tended to be hardy men from mountainous, uncompromising countries and climates. In an age of families which expected to have numerous sons to ensure a continuation of the line, 'young gentlemen' of the Quentin Durward variety often took to the sword to make their way in the world. The Scots have always been attracted to the mercenary life-especially at times when there was no war to fight at home-and their mercenary numbers were made up of all ranks from senior officers to common soldiers, who would sometimes go into foreign service as an entire regiment. The high point of Scottish mercenary activity was during the European wars of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when upwards of an incredible 40,000 Scots were employed under arms at any one time. This excellent book discusses the role of the Scots in the service of Russia, Prussia, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Turkey, Spain, Portugal and France and it makes fascinating reading especially for those interested in pre-Napoleonic warfare. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

In the second half of the 19th century, two brothers living in Ukraine, both Hasidic rabbis, became fabulously wealthy within a short time period. They and their families were celebrated by the Jewish population in numerous folk tales. Even Sholom Aleichem, the great Yiddish storyteller, wrote a short tale about them. Today, however, they had been all but forgotten until the publication of this book.
Based on many years of extensive research, including interviews with descendants and research at the Ukrainian Archives, Sons of the Lion's Cub tells the story of these Horenstein brothers from multiple perspectives. It reviews the life of their father (named "the lion's cub" in Hebrew) and the 1000-year history of their distinguished ancestors. It also proposes a new theory of how they were able to acquire their remarkable wealth.
Описание: A portrait of Jane Austen's England told through the career paths of younger sons--men of good family but small fortune
In Regency England the eldest son usually inherited almost everything while his younger brothers, left with little inheritance, had to make a crucial decision: what should they do to make an independent living? Rory Muir weaves together the stories of many obscure and well-known young men, shedding light on an overlooked aspect of Regency society. This is the first scholarly yet accessible exploration of the lifestyle and prospects of these younger sons.
