It is 1957 and Margie Viccareeza is entering the fifth grade at Mohawk Elementary School in Park Forest, Illinois. After enduring a difficult fourth-grade year, Margie is determined to talk less in class, be a better listener, and stand up for herself. She wants fifth grade to be her best year ever.

Armed with a new attitude, Margie enters school on her first day only to discover that Lisa Bisby, the skinniest and meanest girl in the entire fifth grade is in her class again. Suddenly she finds herself standing at a fork on a road of good and bad decisions. With help from a compassionate teacher and lessons learned from both positive and negative experiences, Margie soon unveils the true meaning of friendship and the rewards of making thoughtful choices.

The Fork in My Fifth-Grade Road shares the tale of a young girls journey to realizing that she is responsible for the choices she makes in life.

Описание: The painter's painter. Light, color and penetrating portraits from Spain's Golden Age luminary. Manet called him "the greatest painter of all." Picasso was so inspired by his masterpiece Las Meninas that he painted 44 variations of it. Monet, Renoir, and Degas were heavily influenced by the paintings of Philip IV's grand chamberlain. Francis Bacon famously painted a study of his portrait of Pope Innocent X. Indeed, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) was more than the most important painter of the Spanish Golden Age. He is one of the most admired European painters who ever lived, and an authority and influence for generations of artists to come. This catalog raisonne brings together Velazquez's complete works, jaw-droppingly reproduced in extra-large format, with a selection of enlarged details and brand new photography of recently restored paintings, brought about by the joint initative of TASCHEN and Wildenstein. The book's dazzling images are accompanied by insightful commentary from Jose Lopez-Rey on Velazquez's interest in human liveliness and equal attention to all subjects, from an old woman frying eggs to a pope or a king, as well as his commitment to color and light, which would influence the Impressionists over two centuries later.

Featuring essays by leading authors in the field, the book utilizes both a chronological and thematic structure, referencing mutually influential periods in Mexican and Mexican-American history. Taking into consideration the bi-national historical factors and narrative constructions of Mexican migration, Beyond la Frontera also describes how we may better understand the persistent legislative debates surrounding migrant rights and national sovereignty.

Описание: Like his Dutch contemporary Vermeer, Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) had little reputation outside of his native land until the nineteenth century, when the Spanish royal painting collections became state property and were installed in the Prado Museum in Madrid. The year was in 1819, and several private and official collections in London and Paris also benefited. Unlike Vermeer, however, Velazquez had a fairly large oeuvre waiting to be rediscovered--and rediscovered it was, with great rapidity and enthusiasm. Goya and Manet are almost inconceivable without the precedent of Velazquez's portraiture, and in fact Manet even called the Spaniard "the painter of painters." His impact on French Impressionism was colossal. And two of the twentieth century's most famous artists painted direct homages: Picasso made a version of "Las Meninas" in 1957; and Francis Bacon's "screaming popes" are based on Velazquez's 1650 portrait of Pope Innocent X. From Goya until today, Velazquez's work has been recognized not only as the essential forerunner to Modern painting, but also as the greatest exponent of seventeenth-century Spanish art.
