Описание: Data from a variety of languages are offered in support of the claim that although there are several processes by which languages commonly add to an already existing stock of long vowels, there is only one mechanism by which a language without a distinction of vocalic length commonly introduces such a distinction. This mechanism is the coalescence of vowel sequences, typically after loss of intervocalic consonants. This book examines vowels lengths, their differences and their effects on language.
Описание: This book proposes that phonological contrast, in particular the robustness of a phonemic contrast, does not depend solely on the presence of minimal pairs, but is instead affected by a set of phonetic, usage-based, and systemic factors. This perspective opens phonology to a more direct interpretation through phonetic analysis, undertaken in a series of case studies on the Romanian vowel system. Both the synchronic phonetics and morpho-phonological alternations are studied, to understand the forces that have historically shaped and now maintain the phonemic system of Romanian. A corpus study of phoneme type frequency in Romanian reveals marginal contrasts among vowels, in which a sharp distinction between allophones and phonemes fails to capture relationships among sounds. An investigation of Romanian /I/ provides insight into the historical roots of marginal contrast, and a large acoustic study of Romanian vowels and diphthongs is a backdrop for evaluating the phonetic and perceptual realization of marginal contrast. The results provide impetus for a model in which phonology, phonetics, morphology and perception interact in a multidimensional way.

Описание: This book presents a description of the phonology and morphology of the nominal class system in Fula, a dialect which displays 21 nominal classes. These are identified by suffixes, which can attach to nominal, verbal and adjectival stems. The main objective of this work is to show, through a lexical analysis, that there are only two monomorphemic marker variants, and that the distribution of these variants is predictable.

Описание: Introductory Phonology provides an exceptional foundation to the field for those who are coming to it for the first time. Developed and tested through years of experience and use, it emphasizes analysis of phonological data as well as the scientific context in which phonological analysis takes place.

Описание: This book looks at the changes that took place in vowel length during the development of Latin into the various Romance languages and dialects. It draws on extensive data from a wide range of dialects and presents a new account of these changes, which has implications for a number of issues in Romance historical phonology.

Описание: Dr Arnason shows that in Modern Icelandic vowel length is determined by syllabic quantity, which is in turn defined by stress and hecalls into question the validity and theoretical status of existing `explanations` of linguistic change. This is then a study for those interested in Scandinavian languages but it has wider theoretical implications for all historical linguists.
