Описание: Can a novelist that the Times described as ""enchanting"" in her portrayal of a young girl and her family in a small Highland village reveal greater depths? Below the surface of Jane Duncan's Friends series deeper themes are at play in the nineteen novels. Alert readers will discover feminist motifs, a wide-ranging examination of women's education and work in the twentieth century, a woman's view of the rising tensions of the 1920s and 30s, and an outsider's view of the racial tensions in the soon-to-be-independent West Indies. Duncan's characters run the gamut from drunken tinkers to rigidly respectable Lowland housewives; from Irish miners to members of the London fast set; from English marchionesses to the semi-aristocratic plantocracy of the West Indies, all portrayed with telling detail. While the postwar Angry Young Men monopolized the attention of the publishing establishment, literary critics and academics dismissed the Friends novels as lightweight.Though out of print for decades Duncan's works continued to be sought out and read by loyal fans. Two of the novels have been reprinted since the anniversary of her birth in 2010, while eBooks have made the series available to a new generation of readers and scholars ready to celebrate a charming and perceptive recorder of the great changes that the Great Britain underwent in the past century.

Описание: Examining the intersection of occult spirituality, text, and gender, this book provides a compelling analysis of the occult revival in literature from the 1880s through the course of the twentieth century. Bestselling novels such as The Da Vinci Code play with magic and the fascination of hidden knowledge, while occult and esoteric subjects have become very visible in literature during the twentieth century. This study analyses literature by women occultists such as Alice Bailey, Dion Fortune, and Starhawk, and revisits texts with occult motifs by canonical authors such as Sylvia Townsend Warner, Leonora Carrington, and Angela Carter. This material, which has never been analysed in a literary context, covers influential movements such as Theosophy, Spiritualism, Golden Dawn, Wicca, and Goddess spirituality. Wallraven engages with the question of how literature functions as the medium for creating occult worlds and powerful identities, particularly the female Lucifer, witch, priestess, and Goddess. Based on the concept of ancient wisdom, the occult in literature also incorporates topical discourses of the twentieth century, including psychoanalysis, feminism, pacifism, and ecology. Hence, as an ever-evolving discursive universe, it presents alternatives to religious truth claims that often lead to various forms of fundamentalism that we encounter today. This book offers a ground-breaking approach to interpreting the forms and functions of occult texts for scholars and students of literary and cultural studies, religious studies, sociology, and gender studies.
Dangerous. Sexy. All-American—or rather All-World—Girl. Pin Up! The Subculture is the first book to explore the contemporary international subculture of pin up, women (and men) who embrace vintage style, but not vintage values.
Award-winning filmmaker and author Kathleen M. Ryan spent more than five years in the subculture. It’s a world of cat eye makeup, carefully constructed hairstyles, and retro-inspired fashions. But it’s also a world that embraces the ideals of feminism. Beauty, according to the pin up, is found not in body type or skin color, but in the confidence and sexual agency of the individual. Pin ups see their subculture as a way to exert empowerment and control of their own sexual and social identities—something that is part of the pin up’s historical legacy.
This lavishly illustrated book includes interviews with more than fifty international pin ups and helps readers to understand how they use social media and personal interactions to navigate thorny issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, sizeism, and other difficult topics. Ryan demonstrates how even within subcultures, identity is far from homogeneous. Pin ups use the safety of their shared subcultural values to advocate for social and political change.
A fascinating combination of cultural history, media studies, and oral history, Pin Up! The Subculture is the story about how a subculture is subverting and reviving an historic aesthetic for the twenty-first century.

Описание: What role do novels, drama, and tragedy play within Christian thought and living? The twentieth century Catholic theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar addressed these questions using tragic drama. For him, Christ was the true tragic hero of the world who exceeded all tragic literature and experience. Balthasar demonstrated how ancient, pre-Christian tragedy and Renaissance works contained important Christian concepts, but he critiqued modern novels as failing to be either truly tragic or Christian. By examining the tragic novels of Thomas Hardy on their own terms, we have an important counterpoint to Balthasar's argument that the novel is too prosaic for theological reflection. Hardy's novels are an apt pairing for examination and critique, as they are both classically and biblically influenced, as well as contemporary. The larger implication for Balthasar's theology is that his innovations in theological aesthetics and tragedy must be expanded in the light of modernity and the tragic novel.

Описание: What he himself characteristically called ‘his idiosyncratic mode of regard’ is a factor few readers of Hardy’s novels can overlook and one with which all serious students of his fiction must come to terms. The fact that there is nevertheless little final agreement about the nature of his achievement has prompted Miss Vigar to make a fresh study of Hardy’s own notes and essays on the art of the novel and to analyse his fictional technique in the light of these unduly neglected observations. Her approach centres on Hardy’s pervasive theme of the contrast between appearance and reality and on his frequent use of ‘pictorial’ devices to express his imaginative vision. She is able to develop a critical account of Hardy’s work that can convincingly explain, by reference to the same criteria, both its strengths and its weaknesses, its successes and failures.
