Описание: A kaleidoscopic history of how the 1960s and 1970s changed London foreverWaterloo Sunrise is a panoramic and multifaceted account of modern London during the transformative years of the sixties and seventies, when a city still bearing the scars of war emerged as a vibrant yet divided metropolis. John Davis paints lively and colorful portraits of life in the British capital, covering topics as varied as the rise and fall of boutique fashion, Soho and the sex trade, eating out in London, cabbies and tourists, gentrification, conservation, suburbia and the welfare state. With vivid and immersive scene-setting, Davis traces how 'swinging London' captured the world's attention in the mid-sixties, discarding postwar austerity as it built a global reputation for youthful confidence and innovative music and fashion.
He charts the slow erosion of mid-sixties optimism, showing how a newly prosperous city grappled with problems of deindustrialisation, inner-city blight and racial friction. Davis reveals how London underwent a complex evolution that reflected an underlying tension between majority affluence and minority deprivation. He argues that the London that had taken shape by the time of Margaret Thatcher's election as prime minister in 1979 already displayed many of the features that would come to be associated with 'Thatcher's Britain' of the eighties.
Monumental in scope, Waterloo Sunrise draws on a wealth of archival evidence to provide an evocative, engrossing account of Britain's ever-evolving capital city.

Описание: In February, 1815, after nine months in exile, Napoleon Bonaparte, the deposed Emperor of the French, escaped from the Isle of Elba. Seizing the initiative while the European powers bicker amongst themselves at the Congress of Vienna, Napoleon advances towards Belgium with an enormous army, where the combined forces of Prussia and England are cantoned. The French Emperor knows that if he can achieve a decisive capture in Brussels, it will shatter the already fragile European alliance.Leading the allies is Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington; the venerable British field marshal who defeated Napoleon's best generals in Spain, yet who the emperor had never personally met in battle. Napoleon knows that if he can draw away Wellington's chief Prussian ally, Gebhard von Blucher, and destroy his army first, he can unleash his entire might against the British. A victory over the unbeaten Wellington will cripple the alliance even further, as it will then deprive them of both English soldiers and financing. In Belgium, Captain James Henry Webster has finally returned to a line regiment after being terribly wounded at the Siege of Badajoz three years prior. He is given command of a line company within the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, the elite of the British Infantry.A series of indecisive clashes will lead to a collision between the two greatest military minds of the age and the bloodiest single day of the entire century, as Wellington and Napoleon lead their armies to either immortality or oblivion. For Captain Webster, he fights for both his nation and to protect his young daughter in Brussels. Along with the rest of the Guards Division, he finds himself at the apex of the battle, where the fate of the entire world will be decided; at a place called Waterloo.

Описание: Views of Europe during the Napoleonic Age The last years of the 18th Century and the first years of the nineteenth century were typified by revolution and warfare. Europe was torn apart by conflict as the hereditary rulers of the Continent fought to defeat first Revolutionary, then Consulate and finally the Imperial France of Napoleon Bonaparte. The authors of the letters which comprise this book were distinctive in that as educated and well placed English people they travelled to the Continent during or after its most turbulent or significant events. Their correspondence, written from the Continent after the Peace of Amiens of 1802-03, after the Peace of Paris of 1814 and after the conflict at Waterloo in Belgium, has left posterity a collection of impressions and insights into the effects of these great times on the nations, cities, towns and people of Europe from a British perspective. Stanley's examination of the field of battle at Waterloo is often quoted and his water colour paintings (reproduced here in monochrome) are often utilised as illustrations of the battle's main locations. Available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket.
Published in 1879, Major Duncan's (of the Royal Artillery) 'History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery' in two large volumes was, in its time, an exceptional and highly detailed examination of the gunners and guns of the British Army. From 17th century, when his history, written with indisputable authority begins, he considers formation, administration, equipment and campaigns up to the later in 19th century. This Leonaur book, created from the larger work for those students and readers of military history who are particularly concerned with the period, focuses entirely on the activities of the Field Artillery and the Royal Horse Artillery during the wars against Napoleonic France. The narrative covers in detail the activities of the British gunners on battlefields and sieges of the Peninsular War in Portugal and Spain and during the Waterloo Campaign of 1815. This unique edition has been enhanced with illustrations not present in the original version of the text.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание:
While popular images of the British Raj are saturated with images and memories of military campaigns, remarkably few scholarly studies have considered the direct impact that the army exerted on the day-to-day operations of the British in India. Douglas Peer's book demonstrates not only how important the army was to the establishment of British domination but also to its subsequent form and operation. Soldiers and civilians, with rare exception, were united by the truism that British rule could only be retained by the sword. A rationale and a programme for the Raj emerged that emphasized the precariousness of British rule and showed that its security could only be assured by constant preparedness for war. Consequently, military imperatives and the army's demands for resources were given priority in peacetime as well as wartime. This accounts for the origin of the Burma War (1824-26) and the capture of Bhartpur (1825-26), neither of which would appear at first glance to be strategically vital or economically desirable. Authorities in London viewed this militarization of the colonial administration and its treasury with misgivings, recognizing not only the financial costs involved, but the political consequences of an increasingly autonomous army. Their efforts to restrain the army were only partially successful. Even William Bentinck (1828-1835), long famous for ushering in a period of reform in India, could only temporarily curb military spending and the influences of the army. He left the military chastened but undefeated; the army's interests were too deeply entrenched and even Bentinck was forced to concede Britain's dependence on the Indian army.
