Описание: What is dramatic romance? Scholars have long turned to Shakespeare`s biography to answer this question, marking his `late plays` as the beginning and end of the dramatic romance. This book identifies an earlier history for this genre, revealing how stage romances imaginatively expanded audience interest in England`s emerging global economy.
Описание: The scientific revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is normally characterised in terms of astronomy and the physics of motion. In The French Paracelsians, first published in 1992, Allen Debus narrates an important episode whose contribution to the scientific revolution has been largely ignored: the long-standing contention between Paracelsians and Galenists.
Описание: This volume examines early modern representations of women’s reproductive knowledge through new readings of plays, monstrous birth pamphlets, medical treatises, court records, histories, and more, which are often interpreted as depicting female reproductive bodies as passive, silenced objects of male control and critique. Luttfring argues instead that these texts represent women exercising epistemological control over reproduction through the stories they tell about their bodies and the ways they act these stories out, combining speech and physical performance into what Luttfring calls 'bodily narratives.' The power of these bodily narratives extends beyond knowledge of individual bodies to include the ways that women’s stories about reproduction shape the patriarchal identities of fathers, husbands, and kings. In the popular print and theater of early modern England, women’s bodies, women’s speech, and in particular women’s speech about their bodies perform socially constitutive work: constructing legible narratives of lineage and inheritance; making and unmaking political alliances; shaping local economies; and defining/delimiting male socio-political authority in medical, royal, familial, judicial, and economic contexts. This book joins growing critical discussion of how female reproductive bodies were used to represent socio-political concerns and will be of interest to students and scholars working in early modern literature and culture, women’s history, and the history of medicine.

Focusing on sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century texts in French and Latin, it compares early modern examples with modern French and English, asking whether changes in more recent beliefs in posthumous survival have led to different tense usage.

Описание: " ... explores early modern culture`s reception of Ovid through the manipulation of Ovidian myth by creative writers such as Shakespeare, Middleton, Heywood, Marlowe, Lyly and Marston. Sarah Carter analyses the strong cultural presence of particular myths and mythic characters involving potentially ideologically deviant sexual behaviour, including sexual violence, homosexuality, hermaphroditism and incest, in the myths of Philomela, Lucrece, Ganymede, Hermaphroditus, Pygmalion, Myrrha and Adonis. Cross-genre and cross-author analysis is combined with sexuality and gender theory to claim that classical mythology facilitates full engagement for early modern thinkers with both depictions of sexual behaviour and discourse on deviant sexualities. It is also argued that this negotiation of sexual deviance is potentially radical in allowing depictions and discussions of non-conformist sexual behaviour in popular culture, and that this subversive potential is ultimately deflated through representation which is ideologically conservative"--Publisher`s description, p.
